I post "nice hat" to someone only if I really mean it. If I don't like your hat I won't post anything at all.
I happily wear a baseball cap often, but only when riding my motorcycle. I keep it in the side bag of my BMW for use when the helmet comes off - takes care of "helmet head."
I...
Don Vito, give it a good crease like FFF suggested, and I think you're good as gold - I believe it suits you quite well, it just needs a bit of shaping. You can do it!
I've gotta put a vote in here for Michaelshane, ever the country gentleman. A great lid, used functionally to keep the sun off the noggin, and he caught the trout to boot! Nice work!
ScottF, it would be fun to know the condition of that old Open Road - pretty hard to tell from the pictures! Did a Lounger win that one? How common are Open Roads in colors other than silverbelly?
Just having a bit of fun with everyone! I started out actually searching for the origin of that leather helmet/hat, and after a couple hours with no fruition, I gave up. I'd really like to know where it comes from.
This was a helmet worn by the Ejército Nacional de Colombia, otherwise known as the Columbian Army, circa 1915.
Wait a minute, I just made that up - I have no idea! I would certainly be interested in the origin of this hat/helmet.
Off topic to the thread, Scotrace, but since you brought up the speed of the search function, I asked earlier in this thread if it's possible to search by phrase rather than word and didn't get an answer. Can you give me some insight?
Is it possible to search "Cavanagh edge," for example...
You guys must get a kickback from Akubra - posting pictures of cool lids that make us lowly non-FedIV owners salivate with longing...
Goose posts one in Carbon that looks great, and FFF (or F cubed) throws in a Tawny Fawn that will make a hat guy's knees buckle! I've got to get one. But...
After reading through this thread, I'm torn between seeing you wearing that probably once-in-a-lifetime panama and doing what you want with it, and the advice of keeping it pure for a collector for possible sale. I'm sure you will weigh Graham's feedback heavily.
A question for the group...
Goose, which picture best represents the "true color" of your Fed IV? The lighter looking photo or the darker one? I see the Deluxe doesn't come in carbon gray, so it's Imperial. Did you get it at Hats Direct? Looks great on ya.
I'm with Neil (and I'm sure everyone else) - I'd love to hear any stories you care to share about acquiring that amazing panama. My experience in judging weave count is from pictures here on the Lounge, and I haven't seen anything quite like your hat.
- Edit - I started reading the thread...
What a beautiful specimen - the elusive Melton. Let's hope many more are posted. I dig that liner and the slogan as well. Looks like a quality sweatband, also.
Sage words, Goose!
Dr., good scientific work on the shedding/absorption capabilities of modern vs. vintage felt. Sounds as though you have frog-strangling rains upon you - an actual rain hat or umbrella may be the ticket, but I appreciate your reportage.
