Great hat with a venerable family provenance.
We really do need to start a Grandfather's Hat club/thread. We've certainly got enough around here to do it.

Good man--Go Big Blue! :)
Honestly, I feel the same way. At that price I'm going to want a guaranteed hat, essentially, and almost any vintage you buy from pictures and description have a level of risk. With Art et al I know I can rely on the product.
The current interest in hats, including vintage, is healthy for the hat market as we are beginning to see many more good quality options in the new hat market. Look at the thread on the Stetson Nostalgia that even hints at a possible redo of the Stratoliner. Now wouldn't that be great? There is...
Johnny, I'll quote myself from this thread. People really ought to be all over them. There is the added bonus of them being a known quantity unlike the crapshoot ebay usually is.
I hope you keep giving the Loungers first shot at the hats, but for the ones that end with no bids here ebay is...
It is advantageous to ebay and its fees, though, which are tied to how much the item sells for. You're certainly correct that there is no motivation for the buyer in a two bidder auction and the high bidder is eliminated.
Have you made a counter offer for a BIN to him? You have your foot in...
The way ebay's second chance offer is set up I think that the only price the seller can offer it to you via that system is at the highest amount you bid. However, the seller could agree to sell it as a BIN to you in a new separate listing at whatever price you mutually agreed to.
My understanding has been that 6 punti = 7 3/8 (59), so if it feels a bit small to you then that's probably right.
As I am a 7 3/8 I would be happy to forward my address to you. ;)
Thanks, and thanks for the good suggestions. What I ended up with isn't really a good example of your approach in action. I think I would need to lower the crown more so I would have more to work with for the interior telescope. For now I think I like this, but I might change my mind later...
^Thanks, Tony. The brown Disney cost me about $5 at the thrift store, although Art's work was a little more. It was well worth it, though. It's one of my favorite hats so final cost was still a bargain. He gave it the full treatment.
The thin ribbon was a lucky find on ebay. I was able to...
Yes, a good time was had by all! Not even softball sized hail could stop our meeting (well, they showed some on the news from that day). Ande got there ahead of me and when I walked in the hostess said, 'You must be the hat guy.' I don't know how she could tell. [huh]
Of course no meeting...
^Very sharp. And since this thread has been revived, I'll post pics of my thrifted 1940s Disney as refurbished by Art Fawcett. The hat box was an orphaned one rescued from ebay:
And currently I'm awaiting this one from ebay complete with Disney box:
I don't think Steve specifically acknowledges orders when they're made, although he does (usually) respond to emails. He said on COW that he had a backlog of close to a thousand emails that accumulated when he was sick.
I have successfully communicated with Steve via email, although...
