Pattern matching on RTW is relatively easy as the pattern is even and symmetrical. Bespoke patterns are cut to accommodate anatomical flaws (dropped shoulders, poor posture, large girth, etc...) which makes pattern matching problematical.
While it does result in keeping the points in place (as do stays/bones) the main purpose of collar pins/bars (as well as snap/button tab collars) is to push the tie out away from the collar stand to create an 'arch' effect. The knot needs to be kept tightly tied and fixed in place to achieve...

Over the years I've found that the consensus of antique dealers is that antique is 100+ years and vintage is 50+ years. The U.S. Customs Service set the antique number but nobody seems to know where the vintage number came from.
