    Musician's hats

Thanks boys. I forgive Don being from Jersey, there's lots of cows in that beautiful state, plus my great grandfather (avatar photo) was from Long Island, and went on to be a buffalo hunter, and a respected cattleman in Utah and Colorado. I've spent a good deal of time around Red, and a...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

That's pretty close to my dream hat, Eric. I've got a 7X, but nowhere near that clean. They don't often come up in a 7 7/8. You wear a cattleman crease well. Frank

Love Baxter, and Waddie. I'd add Red Steagall and Don Edwards to that group of authentic Western singers/poets. Been around both a good deal, always good to hear a story from. Plus, Don always has a great hat on, and usually some boots that are stunners. Too lazy to post pics.

    Western, anyone?

Baxter is a national treasure, especially when he has a few, and does his "mature audiences" material. A genuinely nice guy. Frank.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

When I saw this post,I was studying a milan I bought for my son before he was born, which is the twin of that grey you've got on. Same tip label, same dimensions, but in a size 6 3/4, natural/tan color. It's so flexible, smoothly braided, and soft, sometimes I wonder if it's some kind of...

The Non Shorpy Web All Stars.

Really really like this, Jack. We've got a similar pair of woolies owned by my great grandfather, whose photo is my avatar. I used to make old school cuffs like those as well. Cool art, really excellent detail. Frank

    Post New Hats Here!

You can use a moist towel on the back, that's where the mark would be. May not be a brand name, still great stuff. If you want to put it back on a hat, you'll need to at least clean up the back anyway. If you got a good price, you scored! Rancheros memorabilia prices have gotten crazy...

    Post New Hats Here!

Any maker's mark or name on the buckle set? Lots of Rancheros had Bohlin buckles, which are highly collectible. Great hat, always good to see Rancheros stuff get a new life.

    Cowboy Boots

If Paul Bond boots are still made like they used to be, they're worth waiting for. I have a pair my grandpa bought me as a high school graduation present. They are almost 35 years old, and the sharkskin foot hardly has a mark. The uppers are worn, but the many rows of multi-colored stitching...

    Vintage horse Vs mule leather.

A muleskinner was and is someone who could drive mules, usually pulling a wagon. Bill Monroe wasn't looking for employment by labeling himself with an old West epithet, he was advertising his skills to the foreman. Scott is right, anyone who's spent time with mules will attest to their smarts...

    Texas Hatters

Manny was known to pull a fast one or two back in the early 80s. I was in a service fraternity then at UT, and we were required to wear a white shirt, jeans, boots, chaps, and a black hat. The hat would remain in a telescope crown until you completed your probationary period, then you could...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

The only thing it means is absolutely nothing, unless it's spelled without the first "a." Sorry, been teaching too long.

Somewhere I've got a copy of Jerry Jeff's live album where they played Redneck Mother while apparently intoxicated (more than usual). At the part where they spell MOTHER ("M" is for the mud flaps you give me for my pickup truck), they spell M-R-E-A-R, with substitute lyrics like "E is for...

    Movie hats

Farnsworth was one of those guys who was a background stunt rider in tons of movies. Look at his filmography. The man drove a chariot in Ben Hur, and has a credit in GWTW. After thinking he was the best part of Comes A Horseman, I started catching glimpses of him in some of my old favorites...

    Movie hats

Richard Farnsworth was no slouch either, in the riding, acting, or hat departments. A really good guy, too. Very modest and genuine, just like onscreen. The Grey Fox is hard to find, but still one of my all-time favorites. Barbarosa never seems to make the list, but I've always owned a copy...

I must have seen Joe "King" Carrasco a dozen times in high school. First guy I ever saw "crowd surfing" in person. Still got some on vinyl tucked away somewhere.

As someone who "seemed tall and skinny, then must have fattened up," I can certainly see your point, Michael. I'm still tall. I'll add my favorite ZZ Top album to your list, "Tejas," mostly because "It's Only Love" is on it. Still rocks, after all these years. We had a farm in La Grange for...

Billy Gibbons is the most famous alumnus of my high school, other than gdurand. He was years ahead of me. One night, I was at a formal dinner/cotillion type thing, and I kept looking at a guy with a long beard, formal dress, sitting at the end of my table. Those beards were not the norm then...
