Wasn't "mule-skinner" a fairly common epithet in the old West? Also, wouldn't the distinction between horse and mule value be obliterated by the death of the animal if its value was based on productivity? (I know I'm on vacation when I'm sitting around contemplating questions like these).

Scott is right, anyone who's spent time with mules will attest to their smarts. That's what some folks misinterpret as "stubborn," because a smart mule won't let you put him in what he knows is a dangerous situation willingly.
