Grab the hair right near the scalp and curl around finger from root to tip. The biggest mistake I made when I first started doing pin curls was to try and do them like a hot roller & roll them from the end towards the scalp.

The more religiously you watch TCM, the more you'll see little vignettes in between the movies. I've seen two or three of the Making Faces: Make Up In The Movies now, and they're very interesting.
I'm not too worried about the movie. I have great respect for Bryan Singer. My only consolation for him not doing Xmen 3 was that he was heading up Superman.
