If you have a chance, you should have a look at Beneath Hill 60, an Australian film produced in 2010 about tunnellers in WW1. The Trench, from 1999, with Daniel Craig is also worth a look.
Very good point regarding the quality of some TV productions. I'd encourage people to view "The Wire" as well...one of the best works of drama I've ever seen. Five seasons and not a single weak episode.

Seeing the war in Vietnam mentioned reminded me of a truly unappreciated masterpiece. No jingoism and a very creative approach to the subject: 84 Charlie Mopic (1989). Low budget...unknown actors...excellent film.
