I have been a fan of "the golden era" since I was a kid watching Bogart or Fonda movies on PBS, but where most of my peers in this interest have seemed to cultivate and garner a dressier interpretation of what people wore back then, I was always more interested in how the common man on the...
FT,
The chill will be descending upon the university soon. Perhaps a coon, buffalo, or bear fur coat will help with your Joe College look. Sears Roebuck offered a dog fur version in the late 20's as well. Perfect for the bleachers at the Columbia/Princeton game.
However, the fur will...
Whoops is my face red!
The jacket at the top the page is the Highwayman, not the 1950's halfbelt. See what happens when you oberve things in a careless manner!
Hey Wing,
That's actually Aero's 1950's style halfbelt. They also offer a 1930's version with buttoned cuffs, an angled waist, and a much snugger fit. The 30's Aero halfbelt (and the Aero Cossack model) are about as sweet as they come.
IMO the best Aero halfbelt was a version of the 30's...
You know I didn't noitce any B-2 caps because I wasn't looking for one but I'd bet most of these Toyo/McCoy's realtors stores carried 'em. I have an Eastman Rough Wear B-2 cap and can't reccomend it enough.
I was looking for some Buzz Rickson A-10 gloves and they were sold out everywhere.
Hey Sefton,
The store with the most Few/Real McCoy's Japan stuff I found in Tokyo was called America-Ya! in Ueno and it was surrounded by hordes of stores carrying Buzz Rickson/Toyo stuff. It's only a few blocks from the Ueno subway station so you'll find it easy.
The store I found most of the...
I found some Few jackets in a store in Ueno (they are REALLY hard to find compared to Real McCoy's Japan and Buzz Rickson's). Boss stuff, almost splurged on a B-3 but my old lady was watching me too closely. Later I ended up with a Hercules repro made by Real McCoy's Japan.
EVERYBODY is on two...
Beware of the oil-pull horse. It looks great but the leather tends to leave a residue of whatever color it is on anything that rubs against it, be it other coats in your closet, your car seat, etc.
The jerky stuff is the way to go. Also check out the Buzz Rickson's bronco hide for some nice...
Current Schott jackets are very well made for large production-run jackets, though I think Branded and Vanson might have a slight edge (happily all three companies still make their jackets in the USA). Vintage Schott jackets (mid 70's and earlier) are excellent and readily available at bargain...
I just sold my ELC Star recently. It was such a beautiful jacket, but it billowed out too much for my scrawny frame. I looked like Lou Costello in it (normally I look more like Bud Abbot). My ELC 1401 is the keeper, crazy about it.
Not to digress but...Hey Chris, I dig your aviatar. A .366...
Hey Jack,
That's D.L. Cerney's. I think they've been there for about 21 years. They seem to concentrate on mid 40's to early 50's stuff. Plenty of nice threads off the rack but quite pricey. Unblocked vintage fedoras and deadstock 30's/40's shoes and ties as well. Extremely friendly folks. Fun...
Jack,
Savoia was THE tailor of the 90's NYC swing scene and any show back then had his fashions represented. His period reproductions are the closest anyone will get to authentic vintage. As the swing scene has long since ceased to be vital, most of his efforts these days are devoted to...
Mr. Bern,
He's no longer in Grand Central. Strictly bespoke now. Apparently he's working of of his Cadillac (brand new I might add) visiting people in their offices for taking measurements.
My father, an attorney in San Francisco, has his suits made by a London-trained Indian tailor who visits...
The Cooperstown Ballcap Co. caps are the only game in town. Unfortunately the illustrations on their website are horrible, but in the flesh they are the real deal. I own about 7 or 8 of them and cannot praise them high enough. Stitched by hand. Emblems hand embroidered. Heavy wool flannel. Soft...
If the White Sox can win their division for several more years in a row then "Cardinals-Yankees-Red Sox-like" respect will undoubtedly follow. If they are not able to maintain a level similar to last years's success they will probably be viewed as a '97 Marlins-like fluke.
Between the Indians...
