Thanks Joao! I've been buried getting ready for a trial (I haven't forgotten you fellows), but have also made a big step toward Pro status (more details later), so this really means a lot to me!
I really like the rows of stitching on the brim - looks very early 20th century.
The ribbon work is quite unique. Was this a request, or did Art design the "bow?"
I found it on eBay after a dedicated search for a couple of months. Found the one I bought my daughter on another site.
I want to see it on the hat, but I've got some silvery steel-grey vintage ribbon that should really pop on this hat and mitigate against the "pimp hat" factor. The right...
Well, I don't go around talking tough, and I'm not a big guy. I was a logger as a young man, though, and I have seen a lot of bigger & stronger guys buckle and take a truck home because they couldn't hack the work.
I just wear what I want to wear. I wouldn't wear a lavender or pink hat, but I...
New one, just purchased, 4x Resistol in deep purple. I bought a similar hat for my daughter, but wanted one for myself ;-). I've always liked royal purple.
I don't know yet whether I'll convert it or just change out the ribbon.
Agreed. I bought it to convert, and did this at Christmas, but haven't come back to it yet. I've considered making a whip-stitched 1950's cowboy hat from it, among other notions.
These red westerns aren't as hard to find as some of the other colors. I'm looking for an orange one at the...
I found a vintage one once that was very good quality. It seems to me that like any hat company that has been around (Bailey is another example) they have and can produce quality hats if they put their mind to it.
Here's a better one, and a green Bandera 25 with a high crown and my own "Shasta Peaks" crease (on the left).
Here's a better shot of the Shasta Peaks:
I think not for heavy soiling at least. Better check out the Ermatinger book. Several methods, but usually dry treatment. They are originally treated & cleaned with sulfur, I believe. I have not tried to clean one yet. A water/salt paste and sun drying would probably bleach them white again...
Western. I put in a telescope. The purple is for my daughter someday, but I would wear it with a "manly" enough crease and the right shirt/tie. Here's the green Resistol - only now that I look at it, I see it's actually a Miller 4x:
Well, I like the tweaks. Looks like a Montana cowboy hat to my eye. If the crown is just too high for you, you might telescope or double-telescope it Roy Rogers style. Check out the YouTube video of Roy making his signature crease if you haven't seen it - it's pretty cool.
Better to let me find one & send it, so you don't pay for shipping it twice. PM your size, what quality you are looking for, want to pay, and what you want the end result to be, and I'll look for a suitable hat for renovating...
Joao, the yellow was a 5x off brand made by Langenburg, I believe. I stretched the crown over a wine bottle & hand shaped it for a Curious George & Man In The Yellow Hat costume. The purple is a Bailey 5x. Both were rodeo queen hats, I reckon. I have a red Resistol that's a 3x, I think. I...
Thanks Justin! Glad you like it! It suits you well. Hope it fits as well. Your postcard is in the mail.
Thanks to you also, Joao, hope you get your Resistol soon.
As for the green Resistol above, I have one in that shade, but I'm not converting it! Like Kingrat's work though. Looks a lot...
