I can't believe this sort of attitude still persists today

I lived in England for five years and no-one made even a slightly derogatory comment about my accent. They often guessed wrong (Irish? Dutch? Norwegian?... I'm Canajian, eh, an' I goo oot an' aboot.), but they were never insulting. In the grand scheme of things, if a drunk is giving you a...

    What a Waste!

I read the OP with a growing sense of dread, knowing it was going nowhere sweet... but there is something strangely sinsiter, even cultish about this. They couldn't just throw the stuff away, or give it away, or sell it, they had to BURN IT!?!? Who burns garbage anymore, nevermind the things you...

TV series set in the Golden Age

Paper Moon was a series for a half season or so... I think it was the same year as Planet of the Apes. The HBO Philip Marlowe series in which Powers Boothe made such a good Marlowe was shot in LA and England and then entirely in Toronto. Most of the locations here (T.O) have been torn down...

    The confidence for the hat

Except for a man trying to catch a hat on the end of a wind trolley as it flaps about like a bird on a leash. :D

TV series set in the Golden Age

Apple Pie? Set in 1930s dust bowl town with Rue Maclannahan, Dabney Coleman and Jack Guildford. A Norman Lear show that misfired. The Waltons was on for a long time. I couldn't stand it even as a kid.

    The confidence for the hat

It is a bit of an adjustment, but you soon stop thinking about it... except when it blows off and you have to chase it down the street. There is just no cool way of doing that.

Coen Bros: No Country for Old Men

Best Picture according to the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Article and other winners It really is a great film... even with the hype. I feel like the Coen Brothers have been holding out, as good as they've been. You know youi're in good hands when a film works so perfectly...

    Chappy Chanukah!

MMmmmm, that sounds good. At our house, adding a parsnip was edgy stuff.

    Any Paul Fredrick pieces?

I've bought and had mixed experiences. Good trousers, good shirts, but also bad shirts, a jacket with loose buttons... Lapels are very narrow on their current collection, which doesn't interest me... When their items go on sale the prices are pretty hard to resist.

TV series set in the Golden Age

I'd love to City of Angels and (especially) Banyon again. Brideshead Revisted comes to mind immediately.

    My New 1926 Apartment

Ha ha! My place had a crazy landlady too. We had to tell her we were married in writing before we could sign the lease (which made me furious); laundry could not be hung out on Sunday, and she didn't want anyone cooking curry or garlic in the apartments. She was a cat lady too, and the mews...

    My New 1926 Apartment

Beautiful place... and it looks well-maintained. We lived in an apartment built in 1911 and it too was eccentric in layout. No two apartments were the same and some of the second floor units had secret stairways to the basement!!! All units had back decks that looked out onto a wide courtyard...
