The Dumbest Comment I Ever Heard

This is hilarious, psychologically insightful, and extremely well-written.

Brilliant Facebook video. Thanks, Mr. H.

    VICTORIANA

Not all Victorian. But a lot is, and some of what is not, generally fits in with the Victorian Wunderkammer-aesthetic. Top: lantern of uncertain provenance. Victorian era bird-shaped water vase. hideous African mother-idol. "The Psychology of Love and Hate." one of the Leo Markun booklets that...

Story, that's very cool. Pics coming VERY shortly of my newly-arranged cabinet (well, shelf) of curiosities.

    San Francisco Film Noir Fest.

I only had the chance to go to one evening's showings last year. This time around I will probably hit a couple of them. It's always a good time. The audience is great.

Freemasons seeing a spike in new membership

Whilst trolling eBay this morning (someone beat me by 4 minutes to a BIN brown DB suit, dammit) I noticed several Masonic robes. 3 in fact, from one seller, dating from before 1900. Some had insignia on the sleeves, some not. They looked pretty cool. For initiations and meetings and such. But I...

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

I wish more people understood the normal distribution or bell curve. Because if they did, that would cut down on the following annoying phrase: "WELL, YOU'RE JUST MAKING GENERALIZATIONS. NOT EVERYONE OF GROUP X IS LIKE THAT." "Yes, ma'am, I am aware that not everyone of Group X possesses the...

    LOTS of 1920s TIES

I'm fine moving away from Bold and into Roaring 20s, Kiki's Paris, and Weimar styles. Trades are possible.

No wonder I married a Pole. There is none of that nonsense (or very, very, very little) in Poland.

    LOTS of 1920s TIES

I'd gladly trade some of my bolder 1940s ties for some of those 1920s ties.

    Dress for style blog

Did I understand correctly that he advises the pocket square to be rudely stuffed into the outer breast pocket ("so that it looks like it is growing out of it" -- yuck, sounds like mold) rather than folded neatly? I think origami-like folding is much better.

Of Sheep-Dip, Rot-Gut, and Furniture Polish. The worst of the worst.

Is this a reference to ca ca? I am confused by all this #1 and #2 bizness.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

I have yet to see that show; but I have noticed that if I wear a fedora and a light colored overcoat (whether it be a tan trenchcoat or my yellow cashmere coat) I hear little idiots mumbling something in my wake. I did not know that "Yowsers" comes from that too.

    Exciting archaeological discoveries....

List of ALL open access journals relating to the Ancient World This is an amazing, wonderful list of ALL journals related to the ancient world that are open access -- in other words, that anyone can click on, link to, and read. Here is the link...

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

Yes, just like studying History makes individuals feel bad if they come from a society that didn't feature as many inventors as some societies did -- whoops, that's off topic (and un-PC to the max). How about the horrible expression "Yowsers"? Has this been covered?

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

When I am teaching in front of a classroom, I over-enunciate. This is because I hate the horrible word "What?" from students. So I take pains to make my words very very clear. As a result, some morons think I am putting on an accent, or actually English (or Irish, or Afrikaans, or whatever)...

Freemasons seeing a spike in new membership

I hear what you are saying, but I don't think I could go there ("there" meaning to allegorize God). I did something like that for a long time when I considered myself a Catholic: that is, I did not have faith in a divine being, but I considered the beauty of the universe to BE "God." Then I...

    VICTORIANA

Very nice, Idledame! I have not yet been to the Museum of Jurassic Technology in L.A. It is a Wunderkammer. Not extremely Victorian, though.
