    Men's Underwear Basics: Underwear, Undershirts

VMI... ...wasn't a serious option for me. My Dad went to VPI (now called Virginia Tech). He considered VMI to be a "rich boy's school." For the record, despite the rivalry, I consider VMI to be an excellent school.

    Men's Underwear Basics: Underwear, Undershirts

In some parts of the South... ...breifs are considered to be for boys and boxers are for men -- don't ask me why. It's probably related to the fact that boxers predated briefs (men don't like change) and that you can't really make briefs yourself but you can make boxers (the South was poor)...

    Changes in formal social events

Gosh... ...I think there are several PhDs to be earned figuring out why men don't like to do the dress up thing. Everyone has a pet theory. I think I'm starting to detect the same reluctance among younger women, and even girls. My teen aged nieces are excellent students and are interested...

The many Virtues of the Bow Tie (Send Pics)

Where is... ...CharlestonBows? I wear a bow tie once a week on Friday. It makes it a "Bow Tie Friday." I always say: "if you see me in a bow tie, be happy, it's Friday." People get indignant if I forget. They demand them on "Virtual Fridays." Last time I forgot I had 7 people ask.

    Shirt Sleeve Garters

Okay... ...so is Mr Rover right? Is that what shirt garters are for? Sleeves that are too long? Why did so many golden era men wear them? I get the sock garters. Before elastic, I can't think of any other way to keep your socks from drooping down around your ankles. Shirt garters...

    Rings

In my family... ...my wife, mother-in-law, mother, and paternal grandmother all wear (or wore) an engagement ring and wedding band. Honing in on the 1920/30s, my grandmother had a platinum set in a deco design. The diamond is small by modern standards. According to my mother, the design...

    The Skipper's Hat?

Unlike... ...other cast mates who were appalled at being typecast, Alan Hale reveled in being "Skipper" the rest of his life, wore the hat, and was unfailingly gracious to anyone who approached him.

Forget Indiana Jones, the greatest hat movie ever must be The Sting, question follows

All good... ...points from Ecuador Jim and Pat H. I'll add another point. In a world before credit cards and picture IDs, people used appearance to decide if they'd rent you a hotel room, etc. Now you can look like the biggest bum in the world and your picture ID and credit card will carry...

    Veteran's Day - Sunday, November 11, 2007

At church... ...yesterday, the minister asked all the veterans to stand up, which I did. There were probably 20-30 in a crowd of a 200-300 people -- and this in an area with a large military population. A few years back almost every man over 30 would have stood up.

I guess... ...you'd be in good company wearing one. I think Alan Hale was a real stand up kind of guy.
