Men in the PR -- Poll (WOMEN ONLY)

I obviously didn't get that far into reading it, but I don't understand at all why the menfolk of the lounge would even care all that much? There are so many threads on here that are open to all, and if they decided to have a men-only area to discuss things country-club style, I really couldn't...

Men in the PR -- Poll (WOMEN ONLY)

Me neither. I started reading a few days ago and on page 4 it told me that I had no privileges to read the thread and then it had disappeared!

Men in the PR -- Poll (WOMEN ONLY)

I agree with everything Amy Jeanne said, and feel the same. I just to check in nearly every day, but found some of the "traditional" comments by male posters really offensive to my women's lib thinking, so came back less and less. Whenever I do come back, I still like reading the Powder Room...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

Most of my dresses or skirts from this period have pinked seams, which is sadly not that durable. I would probably do French seams or Hong Kong finished seams.

    Henna hair dying

If you want to go darker, don't mix up the henna with water. You can either use black tea instead of water, or boil onion skins for a while, then put it all through a sieve and use the remaining water for your mix. I used to dye my hair with henna for many years, and this was a trick passed down...

    Native language/dialect...disappearing

Fascinating thread! But then I'm a language teacher. My grandparents spoke a local German dialect (Plattdeutsch) and I picked it up as a child living in the same house with them. Sadly it's dying out with the older generation, though I hear that some schools are introducing it again and there...

    Hat-pin self defence?!

Well, last year I was searching charity shops in the UK for hat pins and was told by several volunteers that they were not allowed to sell them because they were too dangerous. This explains it all!

Gertie's new book for better sewing

I have and I love it! I haven't had time to make anything from it yet, but hopefully over Easter. It's definitely worth the money.

Thank you! I like the fit much better than modern wrap dresses, as Swirls are much more forgiving. I assume you mean modern wrap dresses made out of jersey? Those show up lots of lumps and bumps, which vintage cotton wraps don't. However, I do wear slips with mine or even half slips, because I...

short London travel - any tips?

I am not sure there is much affordable vintage in London, as it is very trendy here right now and picked over. Most vintage shops carry mostly 80s and not that much 40s or 50s, but others can probably be of much more help. For fabric shopping I'd suggest Goldhawk Road. Also check out this...

I love the navy skirt! How long is it? I always thought Modcloth dresses and skirts were a bit short, but that one looks okay length-wise. I won this Swirl, which looks almost deadstock. Can't wait for it to arrive! And the weather to warm up obviously... I also got this L'Aiglon dress

It is by Lena Hoschek (Austrian designer) and I haven't received it yet, but have other items by her and the length is always just below the knee on me (I'm 5'6"). The material is cotton and her items are very well made, though also really expensive. I have only ever bought things by her heavily...
