I’ve had four, Imperial and DeLuxe, and they were all very close to 5 ½”. I really wanted a black Campdraft when it came out a couple years ago, but the 5 ½” open crown height kept me for pulling the trigger.
Where are you getting the 5 ⅞” open crown measurements the Campdraft? David Morgan, the US distributor, and Everything Australian both show the open crown height to be 5 ½ inches.
You should be able to get a rabbit fur felt custom for $250-350. A bit less if you go with someone like...
Oh!
I didn’t mean I’m looking specifically for an open crown, I just meant that most crown heights are measured after the bash is put in, but they often start with the same open crown height. So I’m looking for a hat with a taller height as measured pre-bash to take the crease dimensions (which...
The current Campdraft is listed as a 5 ½” open crown. That’s from Everything Australian and David Morgan. Some here have said their crowns were taller, but mine were right at 5 ½”.
Akubra Campdraft with a 5 3/4" open crown is about the tallest crown available open. Now the western market could have other options but don't wear westerns. Custom is always your best bet.
While I’m here, I thought I’d offer my contribution to the great Campdraft vs Federation IV debate. I took the advice I found on this thread to buy both, “because you will end up with both in the end, anyhow”.
I was expecting to love the Fed IV more, but found that I preferred the snap brim and...
I’m not a big fan of Peanut butter Stouts either. Drank some Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey neat once at a promotional & didn’t like it much. The barkeep told me it was much better served OTR. After trying it that way I had to agree.
Staying on track, from yesterday:
Finally, the hat is heavy - it is noticeably heavier than my Akubra Campdraft with a campaign cord around it. The weight gives the hat even more substantial effect to me so I don't mind it; but if you don't want a heavy hat, then I recommend you discuss weight with Alan.
I have not manipulated...
As you look through the photos here in various threads, I’d recommend that you also look at photos of the Akubra Campdraft as it’s basically an Open Road. I think you could raise the bumpers a bit on the sides if that is what you are thinking of doing.
Just stumbled across this 5 years later. Not sure if you’re still on here, but I love the mods you did and, as a newbie myself messing around with Akubras, I found this quite inspirational.
...for me). I'm still inclined toward the idea of one of their polystraws in forest green.
I'm a big fan of the Akubra Federation. Also, the Campdraft. The latter can be steamed into a Fedora shape, albeit it doesn't have a snap brim (I just steamed the brim on mine down at the front).
About...
Edward, it was the Open Road that Akubra made for Stetson.
As to the Stratoliner and Open Road comparison, here is a screen shot from a scholarly work on advertising from the 1950s.
and to answer the question adout Stratoliner/Open Road.....
Makes sense - now I think about it, the brim shape is a big difference. The Campdraft I steamed the brim into a fedora style downswoop at the front, but it's not a snap brim - which the Stratoliner does have. Seems a Stratoliner might ultimately by intent be an OR for those of us who prefer a...
...is still on my bucket list along with other hats I'd love to have.
I'm thinking it was an OR that Akubra made and continued it under the Campdraft name. The brim on the Campdraft is wider with a more shallow flange, (closer to an OR), than you'd normally see on a Stratoliner. But, change out...
Actually, it's a combination of an Akubra hat body and the materials from a Stetson wool Whippet that I put together for my Frankenhat. The ribbon and bow work, the sweat, the liner, and the brim binding came off of the Stetson. The Akubra was missing the hat band and liner and the sweat just...
Sounds intriguing, any more information? I remember Akubra did make some Stetsons under licence for the Australian market some years ago - as I recall, they made the Stratoliner, which, once that arrangement came to an end, became the Campdraft under their own brand.
