One of my my favorite photos of campaign hat shapes and ribbon variations, presently serving as my avatar:
Another fav that got me interested in this style of hat:

Max,
All the more reason to admire your work even more! So you know the guy at Eureka Arsenal! His site's photos and info have been my biggest source for my homemodding. You could indeed take up the slack! The next hurdle for me will be sweatbands. (But right now I feel proud coming up with...
Max,
Great finds on ebay! I need to take more time searching. Time is hard to find. I'm glad someone else here appreciates these hats, they are unique and doing a homemod repro is a lot of fun! The needle/vent technique looks to work quite well! Never would have occurred to me. I tried just...
This one has it all! It's Herbert Hoover circa 1900! Very campaign looking hat, if I do say so myself. Smokin' that pipe! A man's man! Looking like a Grand Old Partier!

Max,
Here's a shot of the brim stitching on an original M1889 that you may have seen:
And then note the section of these Specs regarding the brim trim as a tapered brim wider on the sides than the back and front!:

WAR DEPARTMENT,
Quartermaster General’s Office...
Good question! I think it's 3 1/4". Never saw a spec on that. I estimated based on photos and drawings of originals. Actually the right side vent is probably the correct height, but slightly further back of the other vent, a fact realized after making the hole for the vent.:eusa_doh: But since...
Max,
Looking good! Thanks for the extra shots! That vent job is sublime! Your machine should be able to handle the sweatband, since you'll be using relatively thin leather! BTW a ribbon seller called Britex has tremendous rayon 5/8" grosgrain ribbon. It sits well around the hat body...
MJ, I'm looking forward to seeing your project! I'm working on finding a 7 5/8 for Worf that will be a suitable candidate for an 1883 like I made for Rene. I have a set of $23.00 1/4" vents off ebay and the trick now is getting the hat body to work from. And the correct 5/8" grosgrain. Great...
"PS: Thanks for the ribbon you sent me! " You're welcome!
If you click on the photos and choose view in new window, they are larger and better to view!

National Guard Campaign hats of the early 1900s
Feast your eyes, these guys look tough, rough and ready...once a month. They rock a campaign hat, too!

Just in case it isn't clear...the pictures below are of the project in its finished state, short of a few minor tweaks.
It has all the features, I'm just working on taking some of the swoop out of the brim, but I think it will always have some. Learning a little bit more with each one. This...
Thanks, R! The work is its own reward! Thank you to you, Roger! The spacing is relatively even, I simply don't have a lot of expertise with the sewing machine yet. I look at these hats as learning experiences that will someday result in a pretty fair reproduction. BTW your ribbon goes out...
