no fashion sense/what to wear with suspenders

Normally, one thinks of dress pants as being worn with braces. Jeans and other very casual pants are not, traditionally speaking, candidates for braces. You would want to wear button on braces. The clip-ons are not traditional and they can, in some cases, cause tears in your pants. If you...

    Colonel Littleton Hats

Orvis one of the Col. Littleton hats offered on their website. It is interesting for me to get the thoughts about these hats from those who know a lot more than I do.

    The Young Victoria

I really enjoyed this movie. The story was not entirely accurate, but it was more accurate than the average historical drama.

    Hat sizing revisited

This is really interesting. I looked at the Stetson chart, and you are right. It says that 23 inches is a 7 1/4. The Akubra chart says that 23 inches is 7 3/8. Now that is a recipe for confusion.

Duke of Windsor - at it again! Duke of Windsor plotted to regain throne

The fundamental problem presented by the marriage to Mrs. Simpson was not that she was a commoner, nor that she was an American. The problem was her divorce. The Monarch is the head of the Church of England. In those days, the Church of England did not recognize divorce. Hence, under Church...

Which decade is the worst in terms of style?

In defense of the 70's, let me remind you of its positive innovations: 1. Neckties were so wide you could use one as a cummerbund in a pinch. 2. Shag haircuts would last for months because - who could tell? 3. Platform shoes lifted the vertically challanged without embarrassment...

Attorneys and Barristers of the Lounge

I think that any interesting decision of the Supreme Court of the United States can be a subject of discussion. The impact of a decision may have a political demension. This is especially true with decisions involving the First Amendment. But those are among the most important and interesting...

    "Where there's tea, there's hope"

I have been drinking Lifeboat Tea for years. It is made by Williamson. This is a pretty strong English brew. It can be hard to find. I buy at least two boxes whenever I see it. Some milk and sweetener. Nothing touches it.

    Necktie Knots

I only use a four in hand knot. When I was growing up, bag boys in grocery stores all wore ties. Their ties all had massive knots. So much of the tie was used up in the knot that the tie stopped half way down the bag boy's chest. Perhaps as a reaction to that fashion statement, I have always had...

Giant Pith Helmet Thread of Doom

My grandfather wore a pith helmet when he did yard work. I inherited it, but never wore it much. Frankly, I'd rather wear a straw in the heat of summer. Eventually, I think my wife quietly did away with the old pith helmet.

    Is this a Filson?

The Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser has changed over the years, and you may have one. But I think that it is more likely an attempt to copy the Filson. It looks like a nice coat, and probably more well made than anything you would buy today.

    Oldest person you ever knew?

My wife's great aunt is the oldest person I ever knew. She lived to be more than 100 and remained sharp as a tack and keenly interested in world events. Here is the amazing thing, her father was a veteran of the Confederate army. And when she was a young school teacher, one of her students...

    Linen Suits: Color Options?

Linen suits should be light in color. A dark linen suit would defeat the purpose which is to be cool. I used to have a cream colored linen suit and loved it. I wore it as suit. I wore the trousers with a blue blazer. I wore the jacket with blue linen trousers. It was amazingly flexible...

Please help me with formalwear for my wedding...

If you are getting married before 6pm, then you have some options. But following the traditional rules, black should not be worn before 6pm unless you are a clergyman. Morning clothes are a possiblity. The morning equivelent of a tuxedo is the stroller coat. It is a gray sack coat worn with a...
