@Mystic do you have any after pictures of the hat? Also, I'm interested in seeing the a closeup of the edge. It looks to me like it has a Cavanagh edge. Very nice hat.
As with tommyK, this one had me chuckling. :) I can see where the "kitten finish" would have been a selling point to folks because, after all, a lot of folks have petted a kitten at some point in their life and can relate to it. I'm quite sure there are a lot less people who can truthfully state...
Just this afternoon, I went to a ribbon outlet near where I live and purchased several rolls of grosgrain ribbon. The two burgundy rolls at the rightmost edge of the picture were $2 each, the smaller burgundy roll was $1 and the tan roll and pieces of ribbon in the ziplock bag were 25¢. Total...
As I troll around on eBay, I frequently try different combinations of hat brands and try to see what is "newly listed". Turns out two Borsalino hats in my size had just been listed with very reasonable BIN pricing, so I pulled the trigger. One was described as dove grey and the other as...
That's good information to know. As this is my first Resistol and I'm so impressed with what I see, I'll be keeping an eye out for more of their vintage hats in the future.
Thanks guys. I'm really tickled to have found this hat. I agree with @Benzadmiral about the finish. It feels wonderful when you handle it. This hat doesn't specifically say that it is "Kitten Finish", so I don't know if it preceded that time, but as a cat owner I think it would qualify as such. ;)
Based on the little research I've done so far, it seems the Resistol Flatop was a short-lived hat in their lineup. There were others who also made similar hats, but just as with Resistol, it doesn't seem they were produced very long. A few days ago, as I was trolling around eBay, I spotted one...
@hatophile, by Statie I assume you mean it was a state troopers hat. If so, that explains the grommets for the chinstrap. Forgive me if this has been covered before. I'm a bit of a newb here.
Resistol Straw Hat Fedora-ish
This showed up on eBay listed as a "Registrol" hat, which seems to be why I was the only bidder. The brim looks like it sustained a little damage that I hope I can fix, but won't know until it arrives. I also won another hat from the same seller with only one bid...
Thanks. I'm torn on whether to use the stampede string or leave it off. I'll probably put it back on and see if I like the way it looks with the new hatband.

I'm not sure what that color is called. Perhaps someone here that's more knowledgeable than me will respond. There is no tag in the hat for me to reference.

Thanks RJR. It is a pretty good match, for sure. Now if only I could get the color more consistent with the others I took. The hat is not nearly as red as these pictures make it look. The ones in my earlier post more accurately represented the color.
I managed to get the new hatband installed without too much difficulty. Though it was advertised as being made of leather, it is actually some kind of synthetic material. Despite that fact, it looks fine for its intended purpose. Also, the brown thread in the herringbone pattern is a very good...
Here's one that arrived on my doorstep Saturday - a Knox Premier Madison Avenue. The condition is nearly perfect other than a little wear on the sweatband. The seller thought it may have been a bowler with a dent in the top and I, being a newbie, just wasn't sure. As it turns out the hat is not...
That is an interesting lid. I like it a lot. As far as the little note you found, I really like it when little historical bits like this are discovered and kept for posterity's sake.
Thank you. I wasn't sure if I would like the color, but after cleaning it up and seeing it in natural light, I quite like it. The new hatband should give it a nice finishing touch. Since it is slated to arrive today, I hope to place it on the hat and get some more pictures of the finished product.
