Art films are typically not dubbed, but I think it often has more to do with how much it costs than anything else. Subtitles cost a fraction of what dubbing sessions do.
But as I said, most American films sent to other countries are dubbed. But that choices is mostly determined by what the...
The choice of dubbing an American film or subtitling is really dependent on the country its going to. For the Swedish market, they are typically subtitled, but that is by far the exception. In most countries where English is not the primary language, American films are dubbed into that countries...
I can't disagree with your point about most remakes which are typically not well thought out. The Maltese Falcon works so well because it was faithful to the book, which the previous films weren't.
And again to be fair to the American version, they did get one of the most original American...
Its not sad when you realize that those are pretty much the ONLY way a male from the ages of 15 to 34 is going to die. It doesn't mean that those groups are dieing in huge numbers, just that when they do die, those are the reasons, and it makes perfect sense when you think about it.

Or did both movies follow the novel so closely that they have very similar scenes?
Really I just see it as the American version of the film being for an English speaking audience, which is MUCH larger than the Swedish speaking audience.
Add to that, there is a long tradition of film remakes...
But to be fair, the American release might very well lead some to seek out the original film out of curiosity. Its not like the situation with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, where Walt Disney bought up all the previous versions of the film and locked them away in a vault.
And also its not...
As a filmmaker, I find subtitles to be a double edge sword. On one hand they allow you to hear the original performances of the actors (as apposed to dubbing) But on the other hand, film is a visual medium, and if I'm spending almost half of my time reading subtitles, I'm missing huge amounts of...
Anyone who says that movies are art is fooling themselves. Moves are far too expensive to make to be art. They have to appeal to a wide audience. I'm sorry but its just the way it is. Everyone who ever started out to make movies as art, failed because you eventually run out of money if you...
Of they released some classics like the Universal 3D films It Came From Outer Space or The Creature From The Black Lagoon, or Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder on blu-ray 3D, that might get me interested in investing in a 3D TV.

3D is dieing a slow death. Films are not not making as much money in 3d as they do in their flat versions. In fact I think its likely that by the time The Hobbit comes out, the 3D version will be an insignificant addition to its box office.

Sure but that has ALWAYS been the way in Hollywood, because the public knows what they are going to get when Bogart is in a film, or Betty Davis or John Wayne. The same with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The studios put these actors in their films because thats what people want to see, and its not...
The original version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (based on the novel) was directed by Niels Arden Oplev, and while he is a solid filmmaker, I'm sorry but he is just not in the same league with David Fincher who is one of the top 4 or 5 directors of the last 40 years. There is just no...
Thank you for the kind comments.
Yeah you need to find a talented filmmaker who can work with you on a regular basis. Either that or learn to do the camera work yourself. I think you'd actually enjoy that.

I don't know if this film has been posted here before, but I thought the quality was pretty amazing. You can tell that its 2 strip, because although you see blue, and green, you never see them on the screen at the same time.

I need to get out and see The Artist, but next year the film I'm most excited to see is Prometheus, Ridley Scott's prequel to Alien.
