I say "yes"...
My answer is one that excludes perifferal concerns. I think that the return of any old fashion will have a life formed by how and when they return to the mainstream. If it happens the right way, with the right timing, it could be a nice thing that helps define early 21st...
snap brim
A snap brim is basically a brim that's "up" all the way around, and can be easily pulled down. Look at the pictures of my open road. There are shots of the brim up sitting on my desk, and the others with it down. No steam, no work. snap it up, snap it down...
The liner is glued in, so I won't be pulling it out. Maybe it's the glue? I'm gonna try Matt's idea. If that doesn't work, I might have to contact Akubra. Unless there are any other suggestions, of course.
You don't have to cut the brim. I didn't, but I like the Fed's wide brim. Many people cut it to match the measurements of the hat in the Indy films.
As for matching brim width to your face, I'm not an expert. Until you actually have a couple, I'd say, stick with 2 1/2", 2 5/8", and 2 3/4"...
I lost track of this post!
With the busy holiday season, I completely forgot I posted this question until last night!
James, the odor is definately coming from inside the crown, NOT the brim, so I guess it's the liner. Now, it's always present, but gets worse when the hat is warm. And the...
Indy solutions
Bart,
If you want something movie-acurate, you'll have to go custom. For that, I guess Steve "Fedora" Delk is the expert, or go to COW. If you want a simple solution that isn't an exact copy of Indy's hat, there are a few ways to go. Miller Hats carries an entire line of...
Loungians, Unite!
I like to think of this as a community of it's own, and I don't really give much thought to who is from where. So, let's keep nationalism in it's proper place, and be patriotic about being citizens of the Fedora Lounge! :cheers1:
WOW
Art, this is an awesome idea. I'd love to see what else you create. Right now, my "custom hat money" is committed, but a later creation will be on my priority list. Fantastic!
Have a Fed
You shouldn't have much trouble with the crown on the fed, unless you have a really tall head. I bashed a c-crown in mine that's exactly 4.5 in front. The highest point is almost 5 inches, but I could probably get it lower without a problem.
The mid-brown is the closest to the...
An actual, physical Fedora Lounge! That would be awesome! It could have a retro look, like something out of an old Bogie film. :cheers1: And we could see all those wonderful hats in person. Sigh... it's nice to dream.
I shaped my Fed by hand, as well. Except the brim. I had to use a little steam. But the crown is all by hand. Every time I wear it, I play with it just a little, slowly working toward my desired bash. You should have not trouble making the pinch more dramatic by hand, Barry.
Welcome Colonel
Some of us are fans of modern hats, and some "go both ways".
I'm not saying Stetsons are no good, let me be clear. I just think that there are better fedoras available in that price range. Would I ever buy another modern Stetson. Yeah. But I prefer others, or a...
Depends what you're going for. The bound edge will give it a classy, dressier look. It's a matter of taste. If I'm going for a practical lid, for rain or heavy handling, what-not... I usually go for a raw edge.
Instead of Stetson...
If the price is right on the Stetson, I suggest you try going to Miller Hats for one of name-brand Miller fedoras. Several come in different brim widths, just as soft, and better quailty. They are made by Biltmore. I own both a Stetson and Miller, and I can honestly say...
Thanks Bob
I'm glad to hear you've actually touched them, Biltmore Bob! Could you tell me if the crown on the open crown version is soft and easy to shape? Do you know if it's softer than the Akubra Feds?
I can't make a direct comparison, but I can tell you that the Open Road has a very soft crown, but the brim on mine is a bit stubborn, like your Stratoliner. However, the curl isn't as dramatic. Otherwise, your Strat is a dead ringer for my Open Road! Nice hat. Anyway, Art is cleaning and...
I've seen a few Lee's in my time (all too small), and I'd love to own one. They are nice hats, soft and well made based on what I've seen. The Trinity is my favorite. If you're wondering if you should try to get it, I'd say yes. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the company.
