yeah... I got it in an auction that got out-of-control and paid almost $70! But I actually don't regret it. I agree with AndyKev, it's REQUIRED READING. really really great book...and if it cost me $70 to discover it and bring to all of your attentions, then it was worth it.
How that...
Those are all movies I've been waiting to see for a while now. i think I've seen 'Murder My Sweet' on TCM, but that's it - the print quality of most of those videotapes is not-so-hot. I'm really glad they're all coming out on DVD.
Veronica Lake looks great on DVD.
Personally, I like old stuff...so I looked high and low on eBay until I found an old-school hatbox that's actually a piece of luggage whch I could travel with. I finally found one (though I never did find a use for the green fedora that came with it).
It still has steamship decals on the...
That Mallory logo would be post-Stetson buyout, unfortunately. Stetson bought Mallory in the summer of 1946. But that logo is consistent with Mallory's 60s advertising. (and the block and brim size is of that era as well, in my opinion.)
Good to know, AndyKev. I have several hats with these spots. What causes them?
specs on the Whippet:
brim: 2 5/8"
crown: just a little over 5" unbashed (if I'm measuring correctly)
ribbon: 1 3/8"
I got to admit...now that I'm selling it, it's sitting out on my counter...and I'm...
He's pretty practical...I'm sure he would laugh at talk of UFOs.
...though I wouldn't be too surprised to hear him talk about JFK.
I don't know much about MM, but I always generally thought he was the "rebel against authority"-type. My mom's very conservative, and she hates him, so I...
Yeah, I know they're little (most of 'em). Ah, well, they've gott ago. I found a couple more which I forgot about that I'm putting on eBay, all size 7 1/8 or smaller. You can look 'em up if you like. I didn't really think many of these hats were of Lounge quality (or I'd be hanging onto 'em...
Um...I could be wrong about this (and probably am), but I have a friend who's a big MM fan, and I recall him saying that MM has a whole book about Clinton and how horrible of a president he was. Or at least, there's a whole section devoted to just such a topic. I don't know much about MM...but...
Fedora -
I do have an old Stetson, actually marked JOHN B. STETSON, sold out of their main Philly store, which has this kind of sweatband on it. It's a bummer because it needs a reblock, and half of the band has already come unstitched. The felt on that hat is super nice...but I never wear...
whoa!
thanks!
Those links could probably have saved me a lot of money...! Ah well, at least I can buy her other book pretty cheap, and ask a question or two.
Fedora, you might want to email her and ask her about the 5X/Beaver 50 thing. This seems like the kind of thing she'd know...
Well, the finest I've ever seen, anyway. I'm only about halfway through it...but I can't recommend it enough. It's called:
Hat Talk
Conversations with Hat Makers about Their Hats --- the Fedora, Homberg, Straw, and Cap
by Debbie Henderson
The Wild Goose Press
I'm only a quarter...
That Borsalino is a real beauty. Not that this means anything...but I have a Borsalino, same color, same liner...looks like the same hat. And it's definitely the finest felt of any hat I've ever examined, Optimo included.
By the way, a related question: Knox and Stetson both had their...
I don't even want to talk about what they're going to do to the Ambassador Hotel...
MK, I wish I had seen this thread earlier. Being a fan of old Hollywood myself, I'm very familiar with the Garden of Allah. When it was torn down, they were aware of the history they destroyed. And they...
Fedora, I have also been bitten by this quandary, as I paid for a Stetson Imperial (since I always hear you speak so highly of them) on eBay recently, and...well, I knew this could not possibly be the felt you have been crowing about. It definitely was not 40s or even 50s felt, I don't think...
OK, I found some suits some of you might dig:
