    Bowler vs Homburg

Almost all "bowlers" (or "derbys") that are manufactured today are fairly soft felt hats. The major difference between "today's" bowlers and homburgs would be in that the bowlers will have narrower and usually more severely curled brims. Yes, put a center dent into a soft bowler and you...

    1920s/early 30s fedoras

Lovely. It's difficult to believe that a hat with those dimensions would be manufactured that late. It's pure early 1930s James Cagney (excepting the color). I've heard tell that Cagney personally favored Dobbs hats.

    Bowler vs Homburg

"Many times sellers mistake Bowlers for Homburgs and vice versa. A Bowler is a stiff felt hat and a Homburg is a soft felt hat. They both have curled brims (not the same type) which causes the confusion with sellers (some do it on purpose)." Many sellers seem to be quite unable to...

    Bowler vs Homburg

Bowlers are worn, as sold, with a rounded uncreased crown. "Traditional construction" bowlers are "hard hats" with very stiff (and even reinforced) crowns which cannot be creased. These days, hardly anyone, except Christy's of London, sells "traditional construction" hard bowlers. Homburgs are...

    Help with Akubra styles.

Curiously, my two "Mid-Brown" Akubras are made of noticeably thinner, lighter, and softer felt than any of my other Akubra hats. My "Mid-Brown" Akubra RM (2-7/8" brim) weighs 4.7 oz. My "Mid-Brown" Akubra (David Morgan) Adventurer (3-1/8"x2-3/4" brim) weighs 4.8 oz.. These two hats were...

    Help with Akubra styles.

My two Bushmen have lower crowns than my two Campdrafts. The open crowns of the Bushmen measure 5-1/2" in height, while the open crowns of the Campdrafts measure approximately 5-3/4" in height. The brims of the Bushmen are flatter than the brims of the Campdrafts. The felt of the Bushmen is a...

how to start building a man's wardrobe?

"Wool in a Fresco weave is good in high temps, as is silk in a coarser weave" Both wool and silk are known to be particularly good insulators. May be tolerable for sitting in the shade, but not for anything approaching strenuous physical activity in the sun.

    Searching for my next hat

"I wish it was easier to get a feel for color on the net." Yet another reason for visiting a real hat store. The next best thing is to get a hold of actual hatters' swatches. Third best is see color swatches or samples in a hatter's catalog or on their website. Sellers' photographs of hats...

    Searching for my next hat

"Is there something else you know they carry that you think would make it worth the trip?" If I traveled that far to try out hats, I'd make a day of it and try out everything that they had that even mildly appealed to me, fur felts, tweeds, panamas, whatever.

    Searching for my next hat

"If they had an Akubra Adventurer" Please note that the Akubra Adventurer sold by Australian retailers is a different hat from the Akubra Adventurer imported by David Morgan and sold by them and other U.S.A. retailers.

how to start building a man's wardrobe?

"Do you guys wear wool gabardine in summer? Or cotton blends for more casual summer wear...?" Only if they spend all of their time in an air-conditioned or refrigerated indoor environment, or enjoy the aroma and texture of slow-roasted meat. The clear winner among fabrics to wear to stay cool...

how to start building a man's wardrobe?

Very nice current new "vintage style" leather jackets should be able to be found for less than $200, which "even on a budget" isn't too terribly bad for a piece of apparel that should last for quite a few decades if reasonably well cared for. For double-breasted overcoats (which seem to have...

how to start building a man's wardrobe?

Outside of a suit, non-jean trousers, at a reasonable price, that fit, will probably be the most difficult thing to find. These are high-waisted and very loose-fitting, and are fairly easily found for about $160, but if you hurry you might snag the last pair for $25 including shipping, here...

    FS: 7 1/4 - Silverbelly Bonar-Phelps 10x Quality, Open Road Style Hat

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions. As for: "4.Weight of hat? Not sure how to answer this. The felt seems fairly lightweight to me, although the hat is stiff and not soft like many of my hats." I weigh hats and other things by putting them on a scale. ;) I really...

Akubra hat like the Squatter but with wider brim

"The UAE is a great place to live" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Dhabi#Climate And that's without the humidity data, which I have heard is well nigh unbelievable. Ah, well. Different strokes for different folks.

Akubra hat like the Squatter but with wider brim

For what it's worth. I have Bushmen in both Nullabor Tan and Moonstone. The felt of the Moonstone is noticeably thicker and heavier than that of the Nullabor Tan one.
