Just when you think you'd heard the worst of it ...

I agree too. So it boggles my brain that countries like Iran can actually host a conference on holocaust denial and invite other countries to participate! I mean, with evidence-based practice being standard format, as conferences go, you'd have to think it's a rather short program but long on...

Just when you think you'd heard the worst of it ...

I have to say, this has proved a most insightful thread so far! I put the OT up to show others the link and have ended up learning sooo much more myself! Thanks to all. Your insights are truly interesting, Big J - and may I ask a question please? Some years ago (early noughties), a couple of...

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

Couldn't agree more. As I said, I went downtown to see a 2K presentation of Blade Runner: The Final Cut on Friday night. It is, as you say, a sci-fi film-noir masterpiece. I've seen it sooo many times and to see it on the big screen again (as I first did in 1982 - and the then-supporting feature...

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

I did - once. An inferior film IMO and it's a perfect example of how a remake can sometimes be a good thing. It was vastly improved having been given the Hollywood treatment. I mean, the original had a lead actor with quite ordinary looks who wasn't very charismatic to speak of, and when he had...

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

PS. I said Vanilla Sky's my favourite. I just saw Bladerunner: The Final Cut at the TIFF Lightbox on Friday night. A masterpiece!

    Alexander Leathers opinion needed.

I love a happy ending. Beautiful!

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

Thanks Otter. I know - it was utterly incredible and I didn't see it at the cinema as, from the trailers, I somehow thought it'd be formulaic somehow. WRONG! Jack Reacher was the same. I should have known better - Tom Cruise is my favourite actor and he doesn't make bad films (as he's a control...

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

Some great comments here. I have to say that I feel sorry for youngsters today who are seeing the SW movies fresh - they've no sense of appreciation for what it is they're seeing. Back then, as i said, I was 10 and loved good sci-fi and was brought up on a delicious diet of Stingray...

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

No, not just the theme. It's the sound of the TIE fighters and the blasters and the Falcon … and those three words from Han Solo. You look quite young on your avatar there, Navetsea, but it transports me right back to 1977 (when I was 10) when the film first came out amid massive hoopla and it...

What do you do for Living?

Wot'cha mean? It's all just eggs, bacon and beans and a fried slice! Sorted. If it's any consolation, I had to occasionally watch The Wire with subtitles. And the odd line in NYPD Blue. It works both ways!

Han Solo's leather jacket in SW7

I just watched the trailer. Apparently it's a full 1' 50" long … and it's the fastest 1'50" I can ever recall. Fantastic!!! Wow. It's so amazing how such simple - and yet familiar - things as sound effects of things that aren't real and Harrison's voice saying just three words can give me...

What do you do for Living?

And I have to say that I think this is a great thread. I've enjoyed every single post so far and not skipped over any reply. Some great stories ... And yes, there's a place for this question elsewhere in the Observation Bar or whatever, but I recently did something unusual and ventured out of...

What do you do for Living?

The crotchetiness could well have been his Alzheimer's kicking in - and he and his son did a good short feature for the Alzheimer's Society detailing his journey with it before his end and you can see it online … I was so glad to have met him well before all that at a Fanderson conference that I...

    False Valor/ Walter Mitty

I love the air force squadron/group patches of that whole era and, as you say Big J, some of them are artful and have meaning - and as stated, I think it's a good way to remember the many guys who dutifully served and strived and suffered, many making it and many not, so they aren't otherwise...

Just when you think you'd heard the worst of it ...

Glad for your perspectives there, Big J. And I hear you about Japan (I sent you an interesting article by Stratfor via PM) and one can get a good sense about Japan's changing mood when it wants to remove the D from JDF - Japanese Defense Force (something that was an agreed criteria after WWII)...

What do you do for Living?

Hi guys - and a good idea for a thread, Ben! After all, we all spend soooo much time here (and my girlfriend laments that I don't "make any real friends!" I'm David and 48 next month. I can't believe that number! It feels like a typo but it's not. When I left school in 1985, I had NO idea what...

    Patch placement on MA-1 jackets?

Oh, I'm certain that they're faithful stitch-for-stitch copies of an original - the Japanese are great copiers and are quite OCD about that sort of thing. Which is good for us!

    Patch placement on MA-1 jackets?

As I said, the Buzz catalogues feature plain MA-1's every year plus a patched-up version - and each year the patched version changes (so they're limited editions of a sort - available until they sell out, then that's the end of that run), so picking up the catalogues is always good for reference...
