its not rubber but a rubberized canvas. They are actually very comfortable (and very effective). I have several: a WW2 British Army officer macintosh, the 1952 pattern ditto, a similar 1930s civilian "riding mac", a British army Despatch Rider's coat, and a 1950s British Rail workers macintosh...
Well I’ll have a go, though I think you would do it better! You seem to have a better and more up to date book collection than me and I certainly hope you will add your comments when you get back.
BTW, enjoy your holiday: I’m away for a few days myself from this weekend.
Salv, that’s an excellent overview, though I think you let the Republican government off too lightly.
There were several kinds of killings in the Republican zone. There was the spontaneous outburst of popular fury concentrated in the first few weeks, where the victims were largely...
Baron - to mark the resurrection of this thread here's a link to the FULL version of the film you started it with.

some of my LVC and Lee repro I treat with froggie style kid gloves, others I wash and wear the same as any jeans. I certainly wouldn't be scared of the latter just because of the price, because these are much more hard wearing than ordinary jeans. Think of it as buying two pairs of ordinary...
it's US Navy....
....95% sure. On the strength of the label picture, the ebay trousers, the description of the fabric. Probably not a flight jacket but some type of deck jacket. Very interesting.
these type coats aren't really "German", let alone "gestapo", they were popular throughout central and eastern Europe, into Russia and up to the low countries.
They were never as popular in western Europe, Britain or the US, though they were known - the US Navy issued a "transport" coat of...
I don't know what size you are but if you are in the 36 to 40 range you could probably find a pretty good jacket on ebay for around £200 and some time spent on careful searching.
I'd leave that one pretty much as it is. It looks pretty damn cool in the pix. Like Paddy says its a piece of...
Forget that guilt again, it's a great film. One of my favourite "modern" (i.e. post 1960) gangster films. Not that its about gangsters, Dillinger and his peers were very adamant that they weren't gangsters but bandits.
As history it's a real mixed bag - at times its startling in its accuracy...
ah well, it seems there's plenty of men here in the Fedora Lounge "in touch with their feminine side".....

SALV - thanks for the great poster links. I'm loathe to part with Django so soon but I think I might feel an avatar...
pablo, I think you may have complicated this whole saga! The pictures and description are pretty poor (well it is ebay...) but those look to me like they could be flight trousers to match the jacket rather than overalls. In which case the jacket could actually be some sort of USN B-15 equivalent...
do you know of anthing similar that works with Internet Explorer? Already one of my YouTube faves (Ellington C-jam blues) has been removed from the site....
I'd say it's a 1950s commercial jacket. A lot of B-15 style jackets were commercially available in the 1950s, sometimes made by the original WW2 contractors and quite close to spec.
The label is interesting, BT is right that it's like a USN contract number. My feeling is that it was probably...
The early days of the general’s revolt saw it crushed in much of eastern Spain by a dramatic counter-insurgency on the part of the workers and peasants. As the government refused to distribute arms to the population the people took matters into their own hands, requisitioning arms wherever...
Not really.....With the fall of the axis powers Spain was in the short term bereft of allies. Spain was refused admission to the newly formed UN. The guerrilla resistance in Spain intensified as former Spanish Maquisards turned their attention homewards. It was widely believed that the...
....which according to Catholic doctrine should have led to the excommunication of the Nationalist leaders. It didn't, of course, as the Vatican was yet another major European institution keen to see the destruction of the Republic.
Yes, non-intervention served only to starve the Republic of arms and aid. I don’t think this was incidental, as often implied, I think it was deliberate, particularly on the part of Britain. I’ve read that Blum and the French Popular Front government were ready to intervene, but backed down...
