I thought it was to make them easier to remove if they fell overboard - as wet clothing adds a lot of weight. I recall some Army water survival training I did where we were taught to remove our pants, tie the legs near the cuffs, hold the pants by the waist and "throw" the pants over our head to...
I really like the look of the Shackleton vest but I don't see the value. It's about half the cost of a new Aero jacket, but it's only leather on the front. While I'm not skilled in using a sewing machine, making a vest seems as though it would be pretty easy. I would expect the cost to be lower.
I hate to write this as my heart would be broken if it were my jacket - but that jacket is ruined forever. The oil stains are never going to come out in any meaningful way and will show no matter how dark you stain it.
When I bought my Aero J-100 through TB, Carrie sent me a sample jacket that was navy Vincenza. Beautiful color and much more manageable than my previous Aero CXL FQHH. I didn't see much in the way of color variation though. I ordered my J-100 in tobacco Badalassi - not because of any serious...
I ordered an Aero Buco J-100 through Thurston Brothers. Since I had mine made with Badalassi (which is steerhide), I was told I couldn't get the Buco label. Guess it has to be horsehide for TB to use that label.
I recall when that coat was introduced by Aero. I thought it would really be a top seller as similar-styled jackets are usually Japanese and are much more expensive. Doesn't seem to be a very popular model. Not sure why - I think it looks very nice.
Literally just took delivery of a Bronson N-1 (3rd Type). I'm a pretty solid 40 who usually wears medium. I bought a L (40) in Bronson and it is a perfect fit. I haven't tried it with a sweater/sweatshirt underneath yet, but the initial fit seems great. Haven't even worn't it outside yet, but am...
I recall this Block Bilt thread. Pretty sure the OP was previously known as Schitzo (who spent some time in China):

t's a first-class coat and I also like the descriptions. I really pondered the buy. It isn't cheap and, while the measurements were clearly listed, the suggestion was to buy TTS. I'm a pretty solid 40 which would equate to a Medium in the SEH Kelly coat. I spoke with a few people wh said it ran...
I have one made by SEH Kelly. Really had to give thougt about whether I wanted to spend that much, but I figure I'll have it for a long time!

I'm 5'9, 170 lbs. 40-inch chest, 33 waist. I have size 38 LHB. Fits me very well, maybe a little tight through the torso. I could wear a sweater underneath.I think the issue for you is going to be that your waist isn't much smaller than your chest. You wouldn't come close to zipping up a size 38...
