That's exactly why I have never bought an RAF shearling jacket, despite been keen on them for many years. Just like you've found, it would have been useful - not every winter, but often enough to have had no regrets on spending the big $$$.
-20C this morning, wind chill around -33C or somesuch. I went for a short walk, about 1 km total, and it was okay if you're bundled up. But at the midway point I had to take my gloves off to re-tie my one boot and after no more than about 5 seconds exposure my fingers hurt!
I just spoke to a friend of mine in Ottawa and she says it's -40C there today, although I think she meant with the wind chill. Nevertheless, that's why Ottawa is known as the world's coldest capital city (unless my memory is failing me).
This morning it was -22C but no wind, although in open areas with a breeze it would feel much, much colder. The sun is out and will warm it up during the day though. I haven't seen the temp that low on the mercury for several years.
Are you the guy who bought that Buzz L2B in 42 and wears a 42R suit? If so, what size is your N3B? I was looking at these a while back but could never satisfy myself about sizes and didn't bother to buy one.
You did extremely well and I'm envious! That coat fits you superbly well - lots of length but trim around the torso. The poly/cotton blend will resist wear and tear longer and will be more weather repellant. That small tab to close the collar might seem less interesting than the classic ones...
Looks like a fine cap - well done Dumpster! Great to see someone doing it themselves and 'following their dream', no matter how clichéd that phrase sounds.

To echo what has been said already, synthetics aren't good with fire/heat, except nomex and aramid of course. This brings back a vivid memory from my childhood. My parent's first house had a big fireplace and they used to have a fire going on cold winter nights (which I miss). One night my...
Available one CWU 36/P jacket in green nylon, size 42, made in USA by Wild Blue Yonder (which was apparently linked with Flight Suits and a precursor to Gibson & Barnes). Condition used but in great shape, no damages or smells, a few faint white marks, some pilling on knits. Just dry cleaned and...
I'm pretty sure foreign buyers were exempt at one time. I was in the UK twice in the mid-90s and I remember being told I could get the VAT back. They've probably tightened it up now, both to grab hold of every bit of money they can, plus to cut down on terrorist money laundering 'cause it's well...
