San Francisco: where you wear felt hats in August, and straw hats in November:
Black Sheep Hat Works OR style Milan in hand dyed black walnut, on a warm autumn day at the beach with the pup.
Stiffness does not have a real, tangible correlation to durability. For a fur felt hat, the amount of water protection and/or type of water protection treatment its given is a much larger factor for durability than the stiffness of the hat. For a dress felt hat, the stiffness of the hat...
Modern Stetsons are somewhat stiff. Is it good? Define "good." The stiffness of the felt does not necessarily denote quality, only the amount of stiffener. Whether one finds this good or not is in the eye of the beholder. It certainly makes it harder to reshape, but that will be the case...
Most ebay sellers simply don't know the difference, so it's more out of ignorance than a specific attempt to withhold information. There have been plenty of fur hats labeled as wool.
You can usually tell wool by the knap of the felt, although not all ebay sellers take good photos.
Well, there's two reasons for the bias against wool felt here on the lounge.
The first is that most of us prefer a different style of hats. Aside from the fact that modern fut felt hats simply don't match the quality of those from yesteryear, the vast majority of hats made today have smaller...
That would be an edge treatment called a welted edge. In this case, since the felt is folded over, it's an overwelt. Likewise, you can probably surmise that folding the felt under results in an underwelt.
It's quite a common brim treatment that ends up on hats across many makers and many...
Whippets usually had marked liners and/or sweats as far as I know. To boot, the most common iteration of the Whippet is the wide brimmed, bound edge model. Most model names are lost to history unless it's identified somewhere on a re-order tag.
Crushable hats nowadays are generally wool. Fur felt crushable hats certainly exist, but wool is far more common for modern hats. Basically crushable hats are designed to pop back into shape. Some models, like Borsalino&s traveller, can be rolled for packing.
Looks like a fairly standard modern wool hat. The flecked/heather color of the felt is not often found, and it's a characteristic I like myself (even though I prefer fur felt hats).
I'd place it in the fedora camp, although trilby would not be incorrect.
The vast majority here prefer fur felt...

Since you're in San Francisco, I would take it to Paul's Hat Works on Geary and let them stretch it. You could stretch it with a hat stretcher yourself, but it would probably distort the crown going up two sizes.
For future reference, for brief questions such as this, the best option usually...
Case, that Whiskey fedora is a great color!
Steve and Manfred: Lovely Homburgs today, I actually wore mine yesterday as well. You both wear it well!
RBH: Nice CD! I wish BG would work out for me, but alas, I'll stick to greys
David: Love than Penman
Stunning! To my eye Bob's hats capture really classic lines and shapes but with a unique contemporary flair. This hat looks fantastic Mike, great choices!
