RE: The Fed III
I emailed Hats Direct a couple weeks ago about the Fed III and they had a few in my size (7 3/8) left available, but only in Tawny Fawn and Black. I have held off ordering one myself, because there are hats I want more, and a Fed III would require modifications to get where I...
Having to title them as a homebuilt is definitely one of the things I'd heard about. Actually, part of me was thinking it would be cool to build a Dnepr with a Goldwing engine and transmission. If the Soviet bikes are really built as stout as they say, it should be up to the extra cylinders...
An update on the Ural/Royal Enfield saga. We stopped in at Reinbold's Sales & Service in Frankenmuth, MI on our way to Caro to visit my wife's family. They had four new Royal Enfields on the showroom floor and a used, low-mileage fifth in the back room. There was a Mil-Spec Bullet, an...
My dad talks about that fort all the time. When he was on his way to Japan in the middle 1950s, he and his mom stopped there and he played in the fort. Any idea what the location was called? He'd love to know, I'm sure.

Interesting thought. I don't think my father's father really wore fedoras before or after the war - but he wore his Air Force service cap routinely, so perhaps he didn't particularly want to wear headgear when not required to. He did wear flat caps pretty regularly later in life.
That...
I picked up my new typewriter on Friday after class. It's in absolutely perfect condition and included not only its original manual but also a shipping invoice and a receipt. It appears the previous owner purchased it from the American Association for the Blind in 1955. It was serviced by a...
Except my wife! :D
Thanks for the information, very helpful and succinct. Far easier to understand than what I dug up on Wikipedia and Google after I made the post.
Just out of curiousity, why do you prefer the Enfield over the Ural for solo use? I rather like the '40s look of the Ural...
That's my problem, then, I have the double-tab kind.
(I do not own any ankle socks, though I have considered gettin a pair to go with my Topsiders.)

Don't you guys tease me with all these flathead Harleys. I know they're slow, so I've always wanted to build a WL with an Ironhead Sportster engine (some would say a rigid Ironhead with WL tin, I guess). However that's another project for another day.
Right now I'm looking for something I...
I bought a pair on Amazon.com back around Christmas time, only to find out most of my socks are too short to wear them with. I find the garters themselves have to be over the top of my calf muscle to actually hold the sock up with any success, which dictates a sock that is about 3" below the...
Oh, I hate you all. I desperately want a Whippet and have since I got back into hats and discovered what they were. However, they never seem to come up for sale in 7 3/8 and when they do it's never in my price range. I've only discovered a couple possible substitutes - the Lee Trinity (which...
Those are cute. I take it they're from the UK. Anyone on this side of the pond looking for something similar, should check out Elmira Stoveworks "Northstar" line of appliances and the "Big Chill" refrigerators.
Or, you could always grab an original on the cheap and rehab it.

Agreed, though if they're going to run around like that often, they need to retrofit "Compound Carburetion" from a 1940s model. It looks a bit "Howard Hughes" right now, doesn't it?

Unfortunately, I haven't got my scanner here, but I have a book of pictures of dry lakes racing in the 1930s and 1940s. In one of the shots the photog was standing in the back of a dump truck with Otto Crocker and his timing equipment. One man, possibly Crocker himself, is wearing a back-bow...
Oooh, I've been looking for something like this. I think I'll buy my daughter something for her birthday - and if that works out, she'll get more for Christmas.
I'm hoping to assemble a complete c. 1950 Lionel "Scout" consist for Christmas in a few years.
Thank you so much for posting...
