    Old gas stations

I remember those! I always liked fire department related toys, mainly because my dad was a Chicago firefighter and I pretty much grew up in a firehouse, much like the way you grew up around a gas station. I was about eight when he brought home my first helmet: it was one of the classic old time...

Have women... in the West at least... "Flipped the Script?"

I've heard this complaint from some women that I met when I was in Russia regarding Russian men. As boys the sons were raised by a mother who had to deal with an absentee husband ( widowed, divorced, or just emotionally detached) who doted on their son (usually the only son) 24/7. The boy grows...

    What was your first fedora?

As promised earlier, here are the Before and After shots of my Knock Around hat, an Orvis fly fishing fedora. I suppose it really is my "first," as I have had it about 3 years. I think that the good people at the Brass Rooster of Milwaukee did a superb job in cleaning and re-ribboning the lid.

Have women... in the West at least... "Flipped the Script?"

And then there are those who genuinely enjoy kids and appreciate them, but also realize that they'd make terrible parents, and are honest enough to admit that they'd be terrible parents. I have to say that I appreciate that, as opposed to people who get all starry-eyed at the sight of someone...

Have women... in the West at least... "Flipped the Script?"

I used to refer to them as the "work young// marry young// die young" type. The ones I knew who got married at that age or even earlier generally came from a pretty awful home situation, and saw marrying Mr. Wonderful as their ticket out. And if I had a dollar for everyone of those who came to...

    What was your first fedora?

First real fedora was my Art Fawcett silver belly, a recent purchase. I have an Orvis "knock around" that I'm currently having cleaned and re-ribboned: when I get it back I'll post the Before and After pics.

Have women... in the West at least... "Flipped the Script?"

I'm not so sure about women "flipping the script" around this house. I imagine that, having dated more than my fair share of brainless bimbo types I was dead set on marrying a woman who was my intellectual equal (Hell, I'll say it: she turned out to be my better in that regard.). But I've always...

Ok, so some things in the golden era were not too cool...

And then there's the Aussie who frightened a whole generation of children: Although personally, I always thought that he was a lot more fun to watch than Paul Hogan.

Old smells, that immeditately transport you back in time?

Someone earlier mentioned a scent worn by a former girlfriend. I had a similar experience. 20-plus years after I dated this girl, right out of high school, I was on a crowded subway car and some other woman was wearing it. It immediately triggered those old, wonderful memories.

Old smells, that immeditately transport you back in time?

The smell of creosote from railroad ties on a hot day. I don't believe that they still use it to treat the ties, but that scent always reminds me of the trains that I experienced as a kid. The interior of the old passenger coaches and parlor cars also had a unique odor- somewhat musty, many...

    The Annual Affliction.

During the first five years of my marriage one of my wife's relatives took up residence in our basement. He was supposedly going to find work, get a place of his own, and move out. He finally did, after about six very sedentary months. Not in that order, and not until after I finally put my foot...

    Songs That Sound Alike

Edith Piaf, "Les Trois Cloches." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbQUuTQuYoU The Browns, "Three Bells." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTkbj56bnYs Yeah, I know. Technically, "the same song," but a direct translation of the French is, at least in my opinion, more substantial.

Amusing quotes from people mis-dating you

I wore my better Homburg to court one day, and encountered a colleague I have known for over three decades. She told me that I looked nice in my "derby." Spent a few minutes explaining why a Homburg with a center crease could not, by definition, constitute a derby. I think she finally got...

Amusing quotes from people mis-dating you

The head rag/ scarf thing would make me think Hutterite before Mennonite. But it reminds me of a standard comment of my Civil War reenacting days. We'd walk into a restaurant after a long weekend event, and people would ask why we were dressed as we were. I'd reply, "Our religion requires us...

    Kenny Delmar

I'm doing some reading on him and have developed a new appreciation for his work. Not only was his Senator Beauregard Claghorn ("Allen's Alley") the prototype of Foghorn Leghorn, but he voiced other toons that I grew up with, such as "The Hunter" and "Commander McBragg." Despite portraying...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Saw Jersey Boys when it premiered yesterday. Several fine cars of the early 1950's featured in the first part of the movie, including a really impressive Packard used by the local mob boss. Music and acting were not too bad, either.

Take a Look Inside Detroit's Secretive Masonic Temple

Back in my re-enactor days I had the opportunity to attend a national event in Franklin, TN. Word got around that the local lodge was putting on a degree, and that all brothers were welcome. The lodge meets in a temple that, when erected, was the tallest building west of the Appalachian...
