Thanks Jack,
To narrow down the dates a little. I checked on Eastman Bros and Bancroft in Portland, ME. They were a very important Dry Goods / Department Store established in 1865 and closing during the depression.
A ladies Riding Hat is an interesting observation. It has that feel. The top...
Front to back = 8 1/4
Side to side = 6 1/2
Crown height = 4 1/4
Brim = 2 3/4
BTW I passed on two other Tophats. One was a silk foldable opera hat. It had some lining and other issues but was in generally very good condition for $60. The other was also in very good shape but was very small...
Here are some more photos. The lining is a two piece satin. One part is the black oval lining containing the label underneath the top. The other piece is a sewn "tube" that fits around the inside. This second part is lined with either a cotton or wool batting (probably wool). It is sewn to...
Hi,
I was hoping some of you "Old Hats" might be able to help me identify and date this wonderful Knox estate sale find. Please don't ask how much it cost. I hope to be a respected member of Fedora Lounge and jealousy and hatred won't help my reputation. lol:)
First, does anybody recognize...
Well, I'm having second thoughts ... lol. My initial response was based on the font used in the liner. The angular letters and those odd shaped angular "Os" reminded me of Arts and Crafts fonts that were too old fashioned to be used after the war. But, on further searching I found those "Os"...
Check this out.
It''s a Garland Texas Landmark Society piece on Byer Rolnick. In it it discusses Harry ROlnick's close association with Warner Brothers Films. Each Season Warner Brothers was given first look at the Resistol line for that year. The hats were first seen by the public, as worn...
Thanks for your advice on the liner.
My sense, based on the liner design, like I said, is pre-WWII. I'm thinking late 30s. I've seen this liner inside what look to be Stratoliner knock offs. What do you think?
I found this Resistol Kitten Fifteen complete with a Cavanagh Edge and wind trolly today in an estate sale. This is the second one I've found, and, happily, unlike the first, it's my size.
The hat body, edge, finish, and ribbon are perfect. The only condition problems are some discoloration of...
Thank you. My intent is not vintage hats, but on every day hat wearing crowd.
Here's another idea. The fly is attached with a straight pin through the ribbon not with a barbed hook as worn on fishing hats.
What do you think?
Redfokker,
Thanks, for the photos. I like all of your pin ideas.
I don't know if you saw the photos I posted in this thread last week, but I wonder, what you think of my ideas of adapting coins, old jewelry, buttons and other found objects as hat pins? I know they aren't traditional pins...
I have an idea to create something different.
I'm tired of the boring out-of-the-box hat pins most people wear on their hats.
They're cheap, they're plastic, they're mass produced, many contain corporate logos and *worst of all* they're dull!
I've been fooling around with some out-of-the-box...
I watched this discussion again ... sorry, I though there was more men's fashion discussions from Boardwalk Empire. You have to wait for the last 10 minutes or so.
Sounds like a worth pastime to me. ;)
Boardwalk Empire was a historically well researched show.
Six years ago, The Brooklyn Museum of Art curated a wonderful exhibition entitled "Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties" which I saw at the Dallas Museum of Art.
Here is a fashon...
Yeah, I feel like a screaming little kid over some really small stains. They are hardly noticeable, but the hat is immaculately white and any discoloration is visible. Coincidentally, I have a new ribbon ordered. I think when it arrives, I'll tackle the stains again. What do you think of the...
As I said, this was the first time I have worn this hat in the heat. The discoloration is mostly along the stitching and is completely hidden by the ribbon. As I look at it tonight, I think last night's cleaning had some success, but you can still see the affected straw in the photo.
