The interweb did the same thing to the used bookstore biz, basically killed it. It's good in the sense that the interweb allows us to access and potentially buy stuff that goes way beyond what might be available in our local area, but on the other hand gone is the fun of digging through old...
Even the fashion houses are apparently doing reasonably classic looking nylon these days. This L2B homage looks particularly good. It's even got a waist tab.
Oversized furry collars were common in the Eastern Block and Soviet sphere, and even Russia until recently. I agree, the collars are too big to be practical; I suspect at some point they became just a style feature.
Great photos in this thread.
here's more pics of McQueen in The Hunter wearing that late 70s MA-1:
It's one of my favourite films, I don't know why it always gets a bad rap in reviews. It's a 'quiet' movie which I watch when I'm in a bad mood and want something to put me in a good mood. It has that effect. Weird. Great...
Looks like some company in Japan did a copy of the McQueen MA-1 from "The Hunter". It looks like they got the details right, including grey knits. Sold out, of course. It looks like an Alpha, which makes me think they could do one cheap if they wanted to...
It appears that parts of the torso and part of one cargo pocket are made from a different material, or are unwaxed. It's not just a trick of the light; I've seen enough photos of jackets to see there's definitely a difference. Can the original poster comment?
Please try on the regular fit and slim fit at the store, if they have both fits. I'd really like to get some real-world info on the differences in fit i.e. chest tightness, body length, sleeve length. Thanks.
If you're looking at the U.S. website then be careful, they have traditional fit jackets (MA-1, N2B, N3B, B-15) and slim-fit jackets (MA-1, L2B, B-15). I don't know how the slim fit jackets fit yet, but from what little I've been able to gather on the interweb they seem to fit slimmer in the...
^ Thanks. That was my sense from what you're posted and what I've read on the interweb. The original MA-1 jackets of course were just B-15 jackets with the collars chopped off, same weight, etc.
As for you guys who always push originals, yeah I get it, but originals and repros are too damn...
Just to clarify Nick, your B-15 and MA-1 are the same "weight", same insulation thickness, etc? If so, is it accurate to say your B-15 is the same as your MA-1 except with a fur collar? Thanks.
Sloan's right, just wear it.
The long discontinued Alpha Vintage series did not have wool insulation, although the knits might have been wool. Either way, these jackets are not to be washed. If you want a washable flight jacket, get one of the newer nomex CWU jackets.
If you want a made in the...
It's astonishing (to me) that they were still making jackets at those dates, since they were obsolete by a long time. I can see keeping the N3B around since there would always be a need for a heavy parka. Weird. I've seen no photographic evidence, but nobody takes photos of ground crew, ha ha
I'm also surprised that they kept updating the specs for these jackets at such a late date. If you look earlier in this thread and others you'll see a mil-spec document for L2B jackets dated 1979 and N2B jackets dated 1983. Again, why such late dates? Surely the nomex CWU jackets were being...
