I remember the latter because of my wife's comment at the time, to wit: "These people hire au pairs and have no idea what they're getting into. Those Brit girls just want to come over here to party. The parents who hire them think that they're getting Daphne Moon from Frasier!"
My mom had a serious substance abuse problem, and I had an older brother with severe developmental disabilities, what was referred to at the time as "mental retardation." Parents fought continually. A lot of grist there for a therapist's couch, I'm sure... but it's ancient history. It's over...
We have 'em in the Midwest as well. They still make a terrific cup of coffee. I go gourmet on soda pop and hot chocolate, but nothing beats a good cup of regular coffee in the AM.
Show and Tell time. I've posted these before, but not in this thread.
This is my first Vintage Silhouette hat. Silver belly beaver fur felt, high crown, 1930's style:
This is my most recent acquisition. I wanted a hat like Howard Hughes wore when he flew his Spruce...
I always laugh whenever I see some sunny southern region hit by a rare snow or ice storm, and the locals don't know how to drive in it. It often looks like a bumper car ride on steroids.
Maybe Buffalo and Chicago should become winter vacation destinations where folks who have never...

I know that I displayed my newest Art Fawcett "Howard Hughes" chocolate brown fedora before, but here are some shots that show finer detail of the excellent craftsmanship.
I have received MANY positive comments on this finely crafted hat!
That was grist for a lot of impromptu comedy skits among college friends (some Canadian) and myself at parties of the time, as I recall. His heart was in the right place, but it had an element of overkill to it, particularly with the patriotic music swelling in the background.
A few years back on one of my jaunts to Gettysburg we had one of the licensed battlefield guides who had been at the 1938 75th Anniversary Reunion as a boy. I asked him what his memories of the vets were, and he told me that the old fellas mainly spoke among themselves in quiet conversation...
And it is my understanding that a number of Civil War widows were around well after the centennial of the 1960's. It was not uncommon for Union army veterans to marry girls in their teens- the promise of a widow's pension was an incentive for such a person of an impoverished background to marry...
My new Vintage Silhoettes fedora and my A-2 jacket. Art really outdid himself on the hat: I asked him for one similar to the fedora Howard Hughes wore in several photographs, and he certainly nailed it.
