Newspaper ads placed by stores don't always reflect the product. That was the original reason for the Nothing But Stetson Ads thread - to show the information that Stetson was putting out in its ads. (That thread lost its purpose, which was as much my fault as anyone's.) This is not to say that...
+1. I've been lucky not to have any problems as of yet. Like Alan, if I'm buying anything that can be crushed, I contact the seller either prior to the sale or immediately after and ask how they plan to ship the item. If it sounds like they're going a bit light, I'll offer to toss them $5 to...
Just to be clear, I suspect that it's a repro, but I don't know that it is a repro. Here's the site with the sterling repros. They also look old, but I don't think they're marked as sterling.
None of the pins I've seen, and I've had around 12 go through my hands now, have had any sort of...
I spotted that one, but the seller's note that it had a "sterling" sticker on it made me suspect that it's a repro.
I found it on NYPL's digital images a while ago. Type in "hat" and you'll find a lot of great stuff.

The sweat has been replaced - and badly - with grosgrain. There's nothing wrong with the brim that 60 seconds and a little steam wouldn't fix. The sweat, on the other hand, will cost shipping, a hatter's services, and more shipping - and still won't be original.
Tango Yankee had one - I believe it's a Dobbs. It was determined (or at least thought) to be a woman's hat, so he gave it to his wife.

Thanks, guys.
Alan, if I had 8-10 hours to kill in Cleveland, I'd hit Lake View Cemetery, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Presti's bakery, La Dolce Vita, and the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse. All are within a few miles of each other, and all are in and around the beautiful University Circle Area...
We've been in Cleveland since Thursday. Even though we're natives of the area, we wanted to get a chance to slow down and look up. The Historic Gateway Neighborhood tours gave us a chance to do that.
These are photos from three of the four tours. The Thursday evening tour covers the...
I've never been to see Solomon Grundy.
As far as shops, if it's not on the list, I've probably never heard of it.
Hat-Stores-a-list
It's been a long time, but someone asked about Boston in this thread.
I remember that Alan has a hat from a place called Hand the Hatter. IIRC, it's in a now...
Having spent a bit of time learning about bandanas and watching a lot of auctions, I've got a pretty good idea of what factors into their prices -
but Carhartt goods are an entirely different animal.
Goorin makes "designer" hats at designer prices. The hats have a modern style, and are made of cheap materials - wool felt, cut-and-sewn fabric, and fake straw models seem to make-up nearly their entire catalog. You can find hats made of those cheaper materials for $50 and under almost anywhere...
