What happened to the leather here and what can I do about it?
could be paint, dirt a scuff? not all leathers are brown under the top coat, many are gray/grayish. is the surface worn off here? in any event start with the least aggressive- a damp cloth and water.- Boyo

I guess it depends on what you mean by better.. If you want the best possible price you most likely will save some money going direct to Thedi. if you want assistance with sizing, measurements, a fit jacket, access to the wisdom of the Thurston team then better would be going through them.
