My old Good Wear A-1 (capeskin) from 2008 - recently sold.
It's approximately the same vintage as Scott's shown on another thread.
I have a newer GW A-1 on order with some design tweaks incorporated.
The later iteration of the ELC A-1 (in capeskin with a narrower silhouette and smaller pockets) is on the money in most respects - not perfect, but a very good reproduction.
The shoulders sit properly with no droop.
The capeskin wears well and shows plenty of character.
If you want to...
+1
Relax and wear it and please don't fork out to replace the back panel, it's simply not worth it. The minute you start getting too concerned about surface finish a little of the pleasure in wearing a jacket goes IMHO. Short of a tear or brushing against a brick wall, wear it and it'll...
Possibly a case of 'right jacket, wrong time?'
I guess it might be prudent to hold it over and not put it on Ebay until later in the year with a similar BIN?
You'll need to check with John which HH he'd use for the A-1 as this is an older photo (similarly, that capeskin is no longer available and John is sourcing new hides).
There's some variation in pocket size, if you look over the original images (the Anything and Everything A-1 thread is a good place to start), but they were typically proportionately smaller than A-2 pockets and placed more centrally.
You'd be surprised Baron - that capeskin is certainly high quality, but is almost as thick as horsehide in places - it's very pliable with great drape but around 1.5 mm. I've recently sold my older GW A-1 and I found that it was a very warm jacket that needed little layering.
Thanks for the compliments Andrew and Paddy. Yes, I'd have thought this one might have garnered a little more interest and I'm reluctant to punt it on EBay, but with the pics in the camera and another free listing weekend on the horizon I'm thinking hard. A shame as it's a well sorted regular...
At this stage John is in discussion with the tannery about the key elements: cost and volume of leather that can be obtained and turnaround. I saw images of the three new cape samples that he's currently considering yesterday. If he opts for the one that he is currently favouring (he reports...
You know that 'young dude in a hurry and too busy to tuck in' look is beginning to grow on me... ;-)
The A-1 looks good though, with the waist knit sorted it'll be a solid and stylish jacket.
