To go full circle, OP, have you considered getting the Buzz Rickson William Gibson MA-1? Or L-2B if you want essentially the same thing but without the heavy winter lining?
IMO it's plain cooler than most leather jackets, which I almost hate to admit because I've spent a lot more on leather...
You should really measure your chest over a t-shirt before guessing based on completely different types of jackets.
Also imo if you want a Japanese A-2, Buzz Rickson's does them much better than (the current) RMC does.
I own plenty of one-piece back jackets but I think we kind of overhype them in our space. Almost none of the hideous leather jackets by SLP and others that people salivate over has a one-piece back.
A two (or more) piece also contributes to better shape.
I don't really understand let alone agree.
The MA-1 was a nylon flight jacket with an interlining, initially wool-cotton pile, then synthetic. It was not a leather jacket. Every leather MA-1 is ahistorical.
Yes I know. I pulled the photo from your dad's post from a few year's back. That's why I reckoned you'd know exactly where it's meant to go if someone wanted it.
@BigBoss actually this Taylor's is the closest thing to what you're looking for. Their build quality is excellent and the sheepskin will give you a drape close the sample images you provided while being more robust than lambskin.
I would recommend sizing down with their stuff, at least that was...
Sizing within brands doesn't necessarily carry over let alone something like a change of brand and completely different type of jacket.
What is your actual chest size? And what are you looking for out of an A-2?
The thing is something like a BR Gibson leather MA-1 won't give him the super drapey fashion jacket look from the example pics. But then again neither will the Fox Creek, probably.
The closest you'll get in quality jackets is a goatskin Aero Happy Days.
Actual leather MA-1s usually look pretty bad (just IMO, as someone who loves leather jackets and MA-1s).
But I do think there are some nice, minimal civilian models with knits that should suit what you're looking for. Since you're aware of Aero, did you check out their Happy Days model? That in...
"Size according to your hem" is one of the most important pieces of advice for cross-zips.
Just saw this. The 519 is actually the same pattern as our 613SH, but lengthened by a half-inch or so. On this variant, it looks much longer due to the lack of belt creating a lot of negative space...
I wouldn't describe goatskin as stretchy. I'm just saying it's pliable enough that you'd benefit from being slightly less constricted as the horsehides or Badalassi.
It depends. I think you really need a pattern designed around a large shoulder + chest setup, like the Aero Highwayman, to make...
I don't really disagree. I used the classifieds in the title because I had just seen posts on their crappy leather discussions urging people to come get their stuff from TFL, and I figured that a title that didn't specifically mention Redditors might be overlooked by them.
I was just in a...
The "Aero patterns" thing here sort of feels like Schrodinger's cat.
For instance, people talk about "beetle backs" on Aero jackets, but ultimately for range of movement you need more fabric, whether fuller in cut or tucked into pleats. This is a tailoring principle that goes beyond leather...
Just saw that there was this 2023 updates thread by Five Star on VLJ which gathers a lot of the reproduced-from-originals jackets, which include a Cagleco G-1, a B-7, an Irvin (probably more; I just looked at the first two pages.)
Should be the first place to look for someone who wants to get a...
I'd wear a Spider-Man jacket but not one for a show from 5 years ago.
I imagine one from the mid-90s, even, would have a pretty substantial leather that would be fun to wear.
I've long eyed Aero's arctic shearlings, but I was waiting for the one with unfinished sheepskin (Ken had posted about this some years ago, probably when he started work on this show under NDA).
However if I order one I'm going to ask Aero to add the chest buckle that these early B-3s had...
