As I think I said on another thread, most of what made the book pretty unique back when it was published - a serial killer procedural using psychological profiling with an interesting historical setting - has been so endlessly mined since that the story comes off as familiar and overdone now...
I was ultimately pretty disappointed in this series, despite its outstanding production values. But it's coming back anyway!

I love Big Night, and coincidentally one of my friends recently cooked a timpano!
I've been catching up on recent films with Woody Harrelson:
LBJ - good, but doesn't add much to earlier portrayals by Bryan Cranston and many others. Since it's focused on his experience as vice president and...
I watched this on HBO last night. Well done, with a splendid cast and a lot more spectacle than the old Sidney Lumet-directed version from the seventies. That said, I don't think it did an appreciably better job of telling the story than that earlier version.
The first two episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime.
I know we have folks here who loved this series. I gave it two full episodes... and I don't love it, and probably won't watch the rest.
Everything about it feels totally bogus to me, from the dialog to the...
Victoria & Abdul, recent drama with Judi Dench about the last years of Queen Victoria. I'm usually a sucker for any period piece about British royalty, but despite an excellent cast this one just kind of laid there. Not recommended.
Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, a recent biopic about the last couple of years of actress Gloria Grahame in the late 1970s with Annette Bening. She gives an interesting performance, making no attempt to really look like Grahame, but she nails her vocal mannerisms quite well in places...
To everyone who said they were fans of Timeless a few weeks ago… the two-hour finale is happening:

That's the second time this series has been un-canceled!
Yeah, that's true. TOS was essentially New Frontiers Democrats in space. Look at an episode like "Errand of Mercy" (the first major appearance of the Klingons) where Kirk is arguing to the (seemingly) weak and primitive Organians that the Federation will bring them "schools and hospitals" a la...
I am ashamed to admit that I had never heard of this guy, but he's another unsung hero of the original series:

A slightly different take...
Like many/most, I came here primarily interested in A-2 and Indy jackets. While I'm not a high-volume buyer/owner like many of you, what being here daily did to me was get me interested in other kinds of leather jackets - Navy flight jackets, café racers, police...
Re the superhero film discussion...
There is practically no superhero/comic book film that doesn't fall apart in its much-too-long, much-too-CGI third-act battle. This is true of Nolan's Bat-films just as much as the more recent DC and Marvel films.
As I've said here many times, a lot of...
I was recently at Katz's for the first time in like 30 years... and I couldn't believe the huge crowds and wait times. The food's still great, but the old school Jewish deli ambiance that was part of the attraction is long gone. Like much else in NYC, a victim of its own success.
Face it: in hot/humid conditions you're gonna sweat with anything on your head. But I have found that my Akubra Cattleman - light sand color with no lining and six vent grommets - is no hotter than my Stetson panama. Ventilation is key.
All my fedoras and other hats with linings and without...
I didn't mention Jeff Daniels because he's ALWAYS great. And it's a very showy role: a coal-black villain... who sometimes exhibits unexpectedly sympathetic behavior. Whereas I'm not sure if I entirely bought Lady Mary Crawley with a rifle...
Re From Here To Eternity... I wouldn't make too much of the "decision" to shoot in b/w. In the early fifties, b/w was still the default mode for "serious" dramas. Color stock and processing were more expensive, the Technicolor (still the dominant process for classy films) cameras were more...
The Netflix miniseries Godless, mostly because it got a boatload of Emmy noms and I wanted to see if they were deserved.
And they mostly are. It's a lavishly produced and well acted, fairly traditional western peppered with modern storytelling conventions (flashbacks gradually filling in the...
