You can get a Panama for $60. Whether or not it fits what you have in your head with regards to "tight weave" and having "good" quality is a whole other matter. I would recommend Panama Bob/Panamas.biz for a lower cost hat. -

Waht do you call the soft straw hats?
You want to look for a real straw hat and not a poly straw as used in most. I believe the Akubra capricorn is a hemp fiber, for example. A natural Panama can be soft and pliable. A vintage Milan straw is soft and pliable, etc. -

Call Bencraft hats in Brooklyn, ask for one of their plastic hat cans. For some reason, they don't advertise them on the internet, but they make a nice travel hat can which can accommodate most fedoras. -

A better quality hat wouldn't have tapered like that....or it would have taken a lot more steam to do so. The Indiana Jones hat folks theorize that the Christy's hats are dry blocked, making them especially susceptible to moisture. -
