Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I hear that the dual-clutch “automatic” transmission in the new ’vette has made believers of the most strident anti-automatic drivers. I learned to drive in cars with automatic nothing, power nothing. Fewer things to break, as we said then, and as some say still. But those bare-bones cars still...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

I occasionally throw a few bucks at the local “paper” (a weekly in print, updated a couple times daily online). They’re on the wire, so there’s national and international news, which I can find in countless other places, and considerable local coverage, which I can’t. All kinds of crap would go...

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

Great finds, fellas. Garage sales are happening every weekend now. I see the signs, I drive by slowly, give it a glance, determine if there’s enough there to bother parking the car. Alas, there rarely is. I’m thinking that these days the pickings might be better in the smaller settlements.

    Hazel-Atlas

Anyone here collect Hazel-Atlas glass tableware? I’m interested in the pastel colored dishes, but I hesitate to spend much without first chatting with a person or two who has actually used it on a fairly regular basis. How resistant to breakage? Dishwasher safe? Etc.

Look on the bright side! Today’s gee-whiz latest stuff will go for a dime on the dollar in three or four years.

    Valuable Commodities

^^^^^^ I find myself maintaining a stack of the weekly advertising circulars that arrive in the mail. I use them in the charcoal chimney, mostly. I’d almost forgotten that newsprint is just the thing for cleaning glass. Here I am spending perfectly good money on paper towels when the junk mail...

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

“ … the same technology used by our heroes in uniform.” Bell & Howell used to be a respected brand, widely known for the quality of its products, as was Sharper Image. Now both may as well be Ron “But Wait! There’s More!” Popeil.

What's something modern you won't miss when it becomes obsolete?

Somehow I’ve lived this long without even knowing what that is, exactly, but I get the sense I will be none the poorer when it is no more.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

People given to boasting of a superior intellect. In my experience, they’re either, 1.) trying to convince themselves, because in truth they harbor doubts, or, 2.) they are in truth stupid enough to believe it.

    S&H. That’s been awhile.

You know you are getting old when:

I was referring to the solicitations from the undertakers. If I were in the business, I’d be tempted to run monthly specials, such as “Cremations, only $299.95 (plus tax)! Offer expires 7-31, so you better get around to expiring yourself.”

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

We’ve discussed this annoying supermarket checkout line behavior before. I recall griping about the mostly elderly people who still write checks and who don’t start the process until all their items are rung up and bagged, at which point they reach into their purses and dig around for their...

^^^^^^ The characters were all “types” we all know, so they rang true. Wojo, Harris, Yemana, Fish, Dietrich, Levitt, Luger. I chuckle just thinking of them.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

It makes me a little crazy, too. That, and the people who don’t scan their loyalty cards and enter their debit or credit cards until AFTER the purchases are rung up. I avoid self-checkout, but I do set to bagging my purchases after the checkout person scans them, so as to save her, myself, and...

That was among the better-written sit-coms.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

^^^^^ A watering wand is all but a necessity for me, what with something like 30 potted plants, some of which come in during the winter and some of which live outdoors year-round. In my experience, the longest-lasting ones are made of anodized aluminum and have a squeeze lever sort of thing to...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

And then there are spray nozzles and watering wands. In my experience, the longest-lasting ones are the ones with the fewest features. It kinda grates to pay 35 or 40 bucks for a watering wand that doesn’t give two full years of service.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Such had been my experience, too. Good hoses cost a lot, maybe too much, even. But cheap ones are false economy. I leave mine out year-round, which is probably not advisable. But I see to it they’re drained of water before temps drop below 32F, and neatly coil them near the hose bibs. I cover...

    Missing Members

^^^^^ I gotta believe that romanticizing just about anything is a way of coping with some level of dissatisfaction with one’s own present circumstances. There’s something to be said for dissatisfaction, though. Being too satisfied is death to creativity.
