Let's See Your Vintage Inspired Office!

Remember that TV ad for esurance by Allstate featuring the actor Dennis Quaid wherein he picks up an apple from a bowl and a crew member tells him it’s a prop apple just as he’s about to take a bite? “Collectible” stuff that never gets used is a prop apple. Whatever enjoyment a person might...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Which is not to say that the self-disclosing, self-deprecating, humble accounts by the likes of our 59Lark would ever be unwelcome. I rather enjoy reading those.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Please tell me I’m not the only one growing annoyed by people making themselves the heroes of their own “autobiographical” vignettes. You ain’t Damon Runyon. And at least he made no pretext of it being anything but fiction. We may be stupid, pal, but we ain’t stupid enough to believe your tales.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

The trazadone the vet prescribed for little Otis seemed to have helped up until tonight. The barrage has been at window-rattling decibel levels and pretty much nonstop for at least the past two hours. Poor little guy is under the bed, trembling. The city established a non-emergency fireworks...

    Deco/moderne bus stations

Old deco airport terminals are deserving of their own thread. Many an original air passenger terminal remains, but is buried under the numerous additions built over the ensuing decades. And very often when an all-new airport is built the old one is demolished and the hundreds of acres it...

    Deco/moderne bus stations

^^^^ So I’ve read. There was a successful campaign to save most of the structure, which now serves as an entrance to the office tower behind it. Not an ideal outcome, but far better than complete demolition.

Let's See Your Vintage Inspired Office!

Those dings and whatnot are honest wear and only make your office all the more authentic. I don’t object to my swag showing signs of having done what it was made to do. I actually prefer it, in some ways. I find it easier to live with things that aren’t too darned precious. And I know I won’t...

    Deco/moderne bus stations

Every settlement of more than a few thousand souls had a bus depot, way back when.

    Old gas stations

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. I’m receptive to the argument that there is an innate human aesthetic sensibility. Echoes of the ancients are found in our contemporary arts and architecture and pretty much everything of human creation. Good stuff is good stuff, whatever its era or...

    Old gas stations

Gotta wonder what effect the transition to electric cars (it’s happening, Ned, like it it not) will have on the market for vintage gas pumps, which, last I looked into it, was looking pretty healthy. Most of us here are old enough to remember when pre-automobile transportation memorabilia —...

Vintage things that have REAPPEARED in your lifetime?

^^^^^ You’re referring to the displeased nephew, I take it? Rules are always subject to interpretation. It’s what keeps barristers in business.

    Clean Jokes

Q: Why don’t the British manufacture computers? A: They haven’t figured out how to make them leak oil.

Technical features, you can really do without?

As to these modern automobiles with touch screens and electric drive motors and “smart” features and power everything … It’ll never replace the horse.

Technical features, you can really do without?

I use it daily. The missus prefers one setting, I prefer another. Like wheels on suitcases, the shower wand, which can be taken from its cradle so that the user can readily put the water where it does the most good, is one of those things that seems so obvious that I’m left to wonder why it...

Vintage things that have REAPPEARED in your lifetime?

^^^^^ I understand and respect that perspective. But I don’t entirely agree. Much of the area near our current abode is “covenant protected” single-family subdivisions or condos. I suppose I could live in such a place if I had no other choice. But I have a choice and I choose not to. I have...
