Long or Short?
I would (and do) wear socks with some very closed-in sandal-type shoes, but ONLY with long trousers! These are along the line of the Cole Hahn or Mephistos at this link.
If you want to look like this (insert a mental picture here of a man with an overhanging gut, a too-small...
Do the best you can ...
It's easy to tie an imperfect bow tie. Heck! I do it all the time! Tying one that looks like it was tied by some poor south Asian drone working 20 hours a day in an unhealthy factory is really hard.
If you can tie one as well as the wage slave, I say, "Go ahead and do...
Striped Pants metaphor
Think of the millionaire character on the Monopoly board game. In the early 20th Century, the black frock coat and striped pants outfit was associated with the wealthy and well-connected. It was worn by Wall Street Barons, diplomats, cabinet secretaries.
A man who made...
Avoid Panama, Akubra is good
If inclement weather concerns you, I would avoid a panama hat. I would never wear mine in the rain, unless I was using an umbrella. I have two Akubras, very sturdy, not terribly expensive.
Avoid the noise, avoid PH Direct
I tried twice to get satisfactory hats from Casey at Panama Hats Direct. What I got instead were hats of good quality bodies, but low quality finishing. Eventually I sent them both to Art Fawcett for remedial work.
Stick with Bob, avoid the sound tag and the...
Not Greek, German
Actually he isn't Greek, nor were his ancestors. They were Germans. When the Greeks needed a king, they imported a German to be "King of the Greeks".
Hamlet says, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."
On the other hand, he ended up dead.
But seriously, you will look foolish if you feel foolish. If you feel confident and project confidence, you will look good in a fedora with a wider brim.
I got a hat trick today
Today I went out of my office to walk in mid-afternoon. At my age (57 at last count) I sometimes get drowsy after sitting at my desk all day, anyway, I can use the exercise. I'm down 35 lbs. with 10 more to go.
I was wearing one of Tony Brouner's fedoras. It is...
AE in downtown DC - Strawfut on display
Were you at the store on Connecticut Avenue, just north of K Street? I was there yesterday and spotted a pair of Strawfut (http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonline/product_6541414_1_40000000001_-1?categoryId=109902&top_category=120552) wingtip spectators...
I was re-watching Foreign Correspondent again last night. One scene I vividly remembered was how Johnny Jones outwits the assassins by slipping out the window of the bathroom in his hotel suite.
The scene combines silliness with real tension. Jones is sitting in his room planning to go out. He...
You say to-may-to, they say to-mah-to
In the USA, "suspenders" are what in the UK are called "braces".
In the USA, "sock garters" are what in the UK are called "suspenders".
Afghan hat
I bought one from an Afghan street vendor in Washington, DC, back when Charlie Wilson was pushing funding bills through Congress for the mujahadeen fighting against the Soviet army.
It was very itchy, the wool being not of the highest quality.
The only arabs who ever wore them...
American Hatter, 1928
I want one of those, and one of those, and, oh, just give me all the homburgs and especially a hat like Jimmy Walker is wearing.
Have any of you seen the bio-pic of Jimmy Walker starring Bob Hope?
From the Alleghenies, west.
"Soda" is, so far as I can tell, particular to the Atlantic seaboard, say from the Allegheny Mountains on east. "Pop" carries on westward across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and on west.
In the South, carbonated soft drinks are referred to (or at least were by...
