    Trouser/Pants Leg Length History Lesson

Thank you. And I agree about shorter men not wearing cuffed trousers. That's why I don't. :)

    Reproduction classic workwear

There were all kinds of welder's caps. Most of the welders I worked beside in the mid 60's (in my railroad days rebuilding boxcars - see, we weren't all hippies) wore quilted caps like this to cushion the helmet straps. Because the brim sloped down they usually wore this type cap frontwards so...

    The Open Road Guild

I bought my OR in the early 80's and it's still going strong. That's it in my avatar. I did replace the thin ribbon with a home made leather band just this year. That said, I baby my hats. If the weather is going to be bad I wear a canvas beater. Even though they are supposed to be able to...

    Trouser/Pants Leg Length History Lesson

I really can't speak to cuffed trousers as I haven't owned a pair since about 1963. But as a teenager I was taught by my father that dress pants should fall to where the sole meets the uppers at the heel without break, and have maybe a 1/2 inch break in front. This actually makes them a little...

    Olympic Nightmare

Sorry, I was just responding to the "truly bloodcurdling" aspect of the OP, not what you posted. :) I should have quoted it.

    The Pinnacle

I was looking at a new Stetson Pinnacle in black this past weekend. A few things stood out to my mostly uneducated eyes. First, its hand was really nice. The beaver was soft, smooth and just felt good to handle. A wholly different feel than say an Akubra rabbit fur felt (of which I own...

    age-appropriate clothing

It kind of cracks me up to see all the anti bluejeans posts all over this forum. This from people who are in a 40's time warp :) But, back to age appropriateness. I can see where a young person might come off as an Alex P. Keaton in a suit, especially if it doesn't fit right, the haircut...

Hats In The Car/A Newbie Question

Roof clearance in my Silverado isn't a problem, but the headrest is. I have a hat holder extended from the overhead console and generally place my brimmed hats there while driving. Looks like this: Western hat stores carry them.

:arated: Still looks dorky to me.

    Steamer or kettle?

Thank you everyone who responded. It seems that for occasional touch ups pretty much any hot steam source not spitting water should suffice. Maybe rebashing on a regular basis would make a J-1 pretty much a must have. Certainly so if you're really into redoing, restoring or making hats...

What cigar (or pipe) did you smoke today?

JR Genuine Counterfeit Cuban Lonsdale. Better than what was passed off to me as a real Cuban in the Caribbean.

    The 1940s working hipster

Small point - that's not a ball cap. It's a railroad engineer cap.

    Steamer or kettle?

A question for those who use commercial steamers like the Jiffy J-1 for their hats; for occasional use does the commercial steamer do a really better job than a kettle or is it more a matter of speed (of actually getting steam) and convenience? In a hat shop I can definitely see why you'd...

    Changing Tastes

I seem to be losing my sense of smell as I age. It's still there, but not nearly as sensitive as before. Accordingly quite a few foods seem almost tasteless now. That hasn't really translated into liking or eating things I didn't used to though.
