WWII/old-fashioned military slang for passing gas.

A bad workman always blames his tools, I know, but I have been having a lot of problems adjusting to this new keyboard. Yes, of course I meant flame-thrower!!!

WWII/old-fashioned military slang for passing gas.

Falme-thrower is another military term I heard recently.

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

It was George Bernard Shaw! I don't know what word he used for jumper or sweater - probably jersey as he was that generation. Rather a dry old bugger and very verbose.

    Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

Needless to say, I like it very much indeed. I have a similar one, which Outdoor Knitwear call Moss Green, but which matches the Canadian 'milsurp' you are wearing in the photo.

You know you are getting old when:

But how much fart shame did you have before you reached late middle age?!

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

Roll neck is more frequent here in the UK but I prefer the US word Turtleneck. I like American English!
  8. Ticklishchap

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

I agree - it's very much the standard American word and I have never heard anything else in the US; for Americans 'a sweater is a sweater is a sweater'. How about this one: turtleneck or roll neck?

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

    Your self ('thy self').

    RUGBY UNION!!

I remember the occasional Rugger injury at school, twisting my ankle mainly and once tearing a ligament (painful). When this happened I was "off eccer" for a while, to use the school slang.

I'm really enjoying it. Now, a maroon v-neck. I hadn't thought of that, but you have planted an idea.

    RUGBY UNION!!

All this was before Elf and Safety I expect.

What shame. So are mine I expect.

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

    Timeless Yorkshire wisdom.

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

Received Pronunciation? "Whatsatmane?" That's [Thames] Estuary English for 'What does that mean?' It's getting almost like 'Strine' in Aus: Aorta - they ought to; Emma Chizzit - how much is it? As for the Yorkshire accent, we find it well nigh impossible to understand here in London. I have...

Which word for sweater do you prefer?

When I was growing up they were jerseys or pullovers. Then the terms jumper and (under American influence) sweater became almost ubiquitous. I still use pullover a great deal, however, except with Americans who usually are more likely to understand sweater. There are exceptions of course, such...

    Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

I asked Outdoor Knitwear to do a patchless (Welbeck) Woolly Pully in RAF blue: their usual colours for this model are Army, Navy, Black and Heather Mix, all of which I have in crew neck. ... OKW obliged and I am very pleased with the result. We're moving out of sweater weather now, although...

    Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

I have a Heather Mix crew neck which I like but don't wear as often as some of the old favourites.

    RUGBY UNION!!

We had those "friendly" matches as well between masters and boys, as I mentioned a while back in another thread. They were great fun and a chance to get our own back! Their tactics were often dirtier than ours however. Maybe we should put together a Fedora Lounge Rugger team. ...
