This has been a wonderful thread! I did not grow up in a hunting family and have had to blunder my way around the bush with little guidance for my entire life. There was a time when I followed Orvis religiously until it finally got through my thick head that the California desert quail country...
Now you guys are gonna force me to open the gun safe and break out a camera. I'm another fan of the .318 WR. The exit wounds those long-for-caliber soft points make are eye openers. Another fav. is a 50's era .404 Jeffrey that I simply must get restocked. That Monte Carlo canoe paddle is a...
Safari jackets have a lot of flair and look great when you can find one that fits. I gave up. Shirts and trousers, I get from Cabela's and if you want a pith helmet (for photography purposes only, they're terribly noisy in the bush) Tagsafari has the best selection. To be honest, in my five...
Never could see that flat-topped design, myself. Now the British Cavalry model with the extended brim over the neck--that's the one! I have a modern version . . . even wore it on safari! :D
When I first looked at it I wondered "What in the world . . . ?" But a coachman's hat? Yessssssss . . . Of course, you now need to go out and buy a coach and four to show it off properly.
If I lived in a more urban and urbane environment, I think I'd be quite happy wearing a stroller to church or the like. Full morning dress would be completely out of place on the Left Coast, except at high school graduation and the weddings of the rich and useless.
I always thought that the true Norfolk jacket had those 'suspenders' over the shoulders to support a pocket full of game. That jacket doesn't look like it would be the least bit happy with a pheasant sticking out of the side. Ladies.
Cone of Silence here but I have to believe that the real reason she's mad at you is that you only spent four bucks! That's the kiss of death in the keep-wifey-happy-land. Follow the advice above. You will thank us for it.
Deepest sympathies but as one who keeps what little is left of his hair crewcut (as befits a retired MSG), I am at least relieved that the problem you have, I will never face.
I once had a MTM charcoal pin stripe 3-piece that I grew too fat for and gave away. Thirty pounds lighter, I deeply regret that decision and hope to have Richard Lim building me a proper light weight tweed 3 piece in the January/February time frame. And I'll need a olive fedora to go with it...
Given the need in the Southern states to reduce the number of the damned nutria, does Stetson still make nutria felt hats? I could consider a 'ecologically friendly' purchase. Might even consider it a duty . . . :D
I think the first question you have to ask yourself is "What is my hat for?" Are you aiming to keep the sun out of your eyes and prevent burning the top of your head or do you intend this hat to be worn when dressing up? Any of the "traveling straws" from assorted online vendors will do the...
A true stingy brim doesn't appeal to me at all and anything over three inches doesn't seem to go with a suit. They're great with khaki shirts and double rifles or fly vests and waders but around town I really lean towards 2 3/8" myself.
Seems like a good idea to me. I 'safari-ized' a Indiana Jones wool and it worked out pretty well. And who knows? It may start you on a whole new career. I think several of our finest custom hatters began by messing around with an old lid.
My thirty-four-year-old son dislikes hats and doesn't wear any at all. (Just wait until his hair starts to thin!) However, my twenty-two-year-old nephew wears caps or stingy brim hats most of the time. Will he eventually move up to fur felt fedoras? Only time will tell.
