"See your dentist twice a year": Products That Changed Our Habits

Then there were those red tablets we had to chew at school after brushing, that left red spots where we missed. I think I brushed my teeth bloody after that....

Your Genuinely Vintage Shoes (old, not repro)

These have come my way. Hanon & Son, New York and Paris. Hanon was apparently a big deal in ladies shoes pre-war. I'm thinking about 1930. Size 6.

    My Mother's Secret Wartime Sweetheart.

My mom would have been a teen during the war, graduating around the time of the war's end. She passed away in 1996. Among her things: this package from a private in the Army (apparently AAF). It is a boxed set of three colorful hankies, each with the old style USAAF logo, from a base in Sioux...

    What's In Your Bathroom Library?

"Of Mikes and Men," by Jane Woodfin, 1951. Stories of breaking into radio in the early years of the Great Depression. Also this. I've been plowing through this Eisenhower bio for months.

"See your dentist twice a year": Products That Changed Our Habits

Seeing your dentist twice a year is still good advice. Modern dental hygiene has made for fewer prosperous dentists, however.

    Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises)

I had honestly believed that there were no surviving Zeros. This looks like a beautiful, well made film. I'm not familiar with his work, but it's obviously well done.

    Is Swearing a Vice?

I've just completed a three year run of working with all women, most of them Mennonite. One had to watch one's mouth every moment. During the twenty-below weather we've had this winter, it was very, very difficult to contain a good expletive or six.

    Golden Era Barware

Score! I've been looking for this style glass since I spotted it in liquor ads from the 30's-40's. So far out of fashion, it is all but forgotten. On the left, the ad from 1947. On the right, my 75c thrift store find.

    Pomade

I dropped my jar of Iron Society, and cracked the jar, chipped the edge. Glass shards went into the goop, and into my fingers when I dipped it out. Quite clumsy. I've not tried any of the Luck 13 stuff, but I remember it mentioned in this thread somewhere.

The number of bourbon barrels aging in Kentucky outnumbers the state's population.

The author doesn't know much about the differences between whiskey and bourbon, but it's great that production of any American product is growing.

Films amd Filmstrips We Were Shown in Grade (grammar) School.

Sometimes, in the days before instant classroom video, we would get a special treat: the teacher (or a smarmy kid) would thread up the projector and show us a film. Usually with some educational message, they usually lasted thirty minutes or less- just long enough to fill the classroom time...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

I am also shocked and didn't know of his addiction. This is an actor I consciously looked forward to seeing in his 70's. But he leaves behind an extraordinary body of work.
