Thanks you, Josh. I agree, this will be my know-around hat. For going camping and hiking, activities forbidden for my finer straws.
Don't forget the sandbag for the flange ;)
Yeah, it's actually leather. And yes, seeing that machine in action would have been amazing. I could, using my prototype instrument, make those holes but it's take a while. A long while.
Thanks for the info, Spencer. Very nice and tightly woven, indeed. And you're right, the sweatband is rather thick. The vent holes on this one go all the way down to the edge of the brim. I doubt they'll make any significant difference letting air pass the sweat though. I thought about making...
Both the hat you posted and mine look the same. But it doesn't look/feel like paper... Isn't Bangora machine woven? Is there a way to tell for sure? I made a close up of the loose "fibers" the ones without that white coating look like straw... they're brownish...

Before:

Before with crazy brim curl:
After I flanged it flatter all around:
Another side shot:
Over all, a decent quality, nice looking hat I think I'm going to enjoy wearing when...

Mine just came. Pluses: I was surprised at how soft it actually is. Ordered a 7 1/8 and fits me like a glove. Lighter than I thought it'd be.
Cons: Brim flange has way too much swoop in the back and sides. The pin is seriously and nothing else than a joke, cheapest thing I've ever seen even for...
