Taking inventory after the Holiday festivities.......

I was never so in need of alcohol as to choose fortified wine, which is what the above-mentioned are. This is not to say that I never sampled them. But even in my high school days, when some of my contemporaries drifted toward Mad Dog (shorthand for MD 20/20), I pretty much stuck to 3.2 beer...

Taking inventory after the Holiday festivities.......

There was a time when my honest answer would have been “at least 200, maybe closer to 300.” Unlike too many former lushes of my acquaintance, I have few regrets about how I lived then, not the drinking, anyway. (The cigarettes, on the other hand … ) It was mostly a good time. I never lost a job...

    Vintage roadside

I clearly remember the turnpike, and how racially segregated Lawrence and environs was back then. The Old Man briefly had a gas station there, one in a long string of his failed business ventures. And he worked at the KU power plant. I hear that the power plant structure is still there, but it...

Twin Teepees Restaurant, 7201 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle. Opened 1937, demolished 2001.

    Vintage roadside

I lived in Lawrence in 1963/’64 and have zero recollection of that teepee place. It would appear that I missed out on one of the cultural highlights of the town. Chalk it up to bad parenting or something.

    When Travel was Romantic

Wasn’t there just recently an electric-powered airplane that crossed the Channel? The technology is very much in its infancy, and maybe the large-capacity all-electric passenger airplane will never be feasible, but I wouldn’t bet against it. Hybrid jet fuel/electric aircraft are on the drawing...

    Vintage 50's ice chest

That’s really cool. A true survivor. How’d it come your way?

    Vintage 50's ice chest

By the way, I dig old picnic gear, too. I have several pieces myself.

    Vintage 50's ice chest

To echo Hurricane Jack … Is there some type of plastic plumbing cap of a close-enough size that would take the threads just by being twisted on? You know, seeing how the plastic would be considerably softer than the metal it’s going over, the threads would be cut easily enough?

Vintage posters and other paper ephemera

I referenced this framed print of FDR in the “Thrift Store Finds” thread some time back, seeing how I found it (and a little easel I display it upon) in a thrift shop. I suspect it was a gas station giveaway (note “Courtesy Associated Oil Company” in lower left), perhaps on the occasion of...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Getting close to the line, eh?

Interesting, um, analogy. Sometimes life kinda feels like a roll of toilet paper.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I’ve mentioned before the guy in the house across the street, the guy who takes a casual approach to most everything having to do with home maintenance, the guy who, for instance, has had a several foot long section of siding missing from one gable end (the end facing my place) for years now...

Did a bit more looking into it. You may wish to check out Hatch Show Print in Nashville. These were inexpensively produced prints, used to promote numerous shows on concert tours, with differing particulars as to dates and locations. The New Year's Day 1953 version is exceptionally desirable, of...

    Chronic Illness

I once jokingly made the same argument myself, in defense of smoking and drinking and all those other unhealthy habits that would have me and my fellow carousers dead before we grew old and became a strain on the healthcare system. But I gave all that up when the deadly consequences became a...

^^^^^ Maybe it’s not just an old person’s perspective. Maybe time actually is speeding up.

Formica Skylark, a Brooks Stevens design from the ’50s. We put it in — what? — three years ago? Four?

^^^^^ I just made a search of other known survivors. Didn’t see another of yours (is it more like a flier than a poster, maybe? What’s the dimensions?), but saw that a different poster promoting that show recently sold for $150K, which doesn’t shock me, considering its cultural and historical...

The show he didn’t quite make on account of his appointment with Bony Fingers. That’s quite the piece of history, and Americana.
