An old thread, but an excellent nostalgia trip. The demise of sit-down Chinese cuisine around here has made me think the time is ripe for a revival of a 1962-style South Seas themed steakhouse that also features non-buffet Asian food.
Anyone know how common it was to wear saddle shoes as workwear? I found a photograph of my great-grandfather (a plasterer) in his work clothes - cap and coveralls - and he's wearing saddle shoes! This was sometime in the 1940s or early 1950s. My thought was that a modern craftsman doing...
Thanks. I'll hopefully be digging up a few more pictures of her to scan soon, she left behind a ton that I wasn't even aware of until we started to go through her things.
Grandma died Easter Sunday, peacefully, at home, at age 96. She was independent to the end, and I'm glad for the way she went, but sad that my last grandparent and link to the Golden Era is gone.
Bought my younger brother a twin to my GEM Micromatic as a housewarming gift for his new apartment. I'm also going to send him my Gillette DE adjustable and a detailed rundown on my wet-shaving technique.
We both have sensitive skin, and the old gel-and-cartridge technique Dad taught us as...
Funny that the Chinese make some pretty decent copies of vintage Americana (thinking fountain pens and razors). Is there a market for retro over there? Or is it purely for export?
Yes, I think either of those would do nicely. Whew, though, I guess the Australian Dollar has gone up a bit since I last purchased. Thank you, tealseal.
I’m wearing browline glasses these days, and it’s put me in kind of an early-1960s frame of mind. I have a nice old Stetson in green with a 2- or 2.5-inch brim that I really like, but I could use something in a gray/black palate. Any suggestions? Thinking equivalent quality to my Akubra...
I used to wear M65s almost exclusively (in HS and into college). I always kept that triangular patch folded up inside. I'm not sure if it's some kind of anti-gas flap, or whether it's for cold-weather use.
As an interesting aside, my dad (USAF 1969-74) had the skirt of the jacket he wore most...
Thanks for the lead.
If it's anything like my Micromatic, you're missing out. Excellent razors. My favorite.
So much so that I rarely use my double-edge razors.

I'll keep you posted, but as you guessed, it's slow when you're being a purist. Plus I've got a couple newer oldies that have to share the parts budget.

Well, it’s been a while since I posted that. My parts pile has grown larger and taken me in a slightly different direction; although all-‘32-and-earlier remains the rule. No two pieces are bolted together, however:
I’m also in regular contact with Clayton Paddison, whose pre-war-style T...
