With regards to what can go with single- or double-breasted jackets, cummerbunds and waistcoats can both go with either. There is some tendency for cummerbunds to be paired with shawl collared jackets, and waistcoats with peaked lapelled jackets, but it is certainly not a rule (the reason for...
Out of interest, what sort of lapels does the jacket have? As others have said, traditionally an off-white dinner jacket is only appropriate for black tie events in hot (typically topical climates), but there's no reason you can't use it for other occasions. If it has peaked or notched lapels is...
I have a friend who recently quit the architecture game to teach tango professionally. She recently got a tattoo of a flower (I want to say a rose, but my memory may fail me) - it looks like a water painting, rather than your typical tattoo, and looks amazing with the dresses she dances in.
One of the important things about black tie events is that, generally speaking, they are not compulsory to attend. Most events that do specify black tie, in my experience at least, have little issue letting people in wearing a dark lounge suit and neck tie because the organisers recognise that...
I think I see both sides to this point - I don't own any shirts specifically cut to be worn open collared, but if I did, and it wasn't too warm, I would certainly want to wear them with a jacket... Although I would still want to wear a shirt with a tie more. ;)
Thinking about it now... a tieless dinner suit is an experiment I regret doing (a navy suit would have carried the image I was going for much better), but it was worth trying I guess.
Back on to the prime topic of suits without ties, I will make a horrifying confession and say that I have worn a dinner suit without any form of neckwear on several occasions. The shirt I wore was a dark red and heavily textured. I wore this particular outfit to go out to casual dinners with...
Indeed, I've seen images like that too. I still don't like it as a look though. ;) I think it's because growing up I was always exposed to people wearing it with a tie.
I think whether notch lapels on dinner jackets are faux pas or not really comes down to personal opinion. I'm sure many people throughout the lifetime of the notch lapel dinner jacket have considered it a faux pas. Personally, I don't see the typical notch lapels, two-button, flap-pocketed etc...
To an extent I think a lot of people don't even recognise faux pas to be excused.
I think another reason we see things like this is because some people are uncomfortable with being dressy at all. Look at neckties for example: lots of people don't like being forced to wear neckties for work, so...
This is a very interesting discussion. I have very mixed feelings about suits without ties. Generally speaking, if I see someone wearing a business-appropriate suit, with a business appropriate shirt, I hate seeing them without a tie (in all honesty, I hate seeing such attire without a waistcoat...
I would argue it is part of the general trend towards more casual dress which dates back way before the '70s. A lot of people have no interest in dressing formally and do not like being forced to dress formally. It's not surprising that people have lost knowledge of the details has basically...
I too think grey is easier to work with. The hat in your avatar picture, to my eyes at least (and maybe it is my computer screen) looks different enough in shade and looks really good with the suit. I've worn a lot of almost purely earth tone outfits in the past which didn't have enough contrast...
Black can be a very awkward colour to work with. If I was to do an office job requiring a suit again, I would most likely wear a charcoal suit with black shoes, but I would certainly be most inclined to wearing a dark grey hat rather than a black one. Lots of people do like their black hats though.
It depends a lot on what type of overall outfit you're trying to put together, and how formal or casual it is. Generally speaking, avoid getting a hat in a similar colour to your coat, unless they match really REALLY closely. If they are similar but not quite a near perfect match, it will look...
Deeoeraclea, without trying to sound snarky, can you please use some punctuation in your posts. I appreciate that you're trying to share information, but the reader has to spend time trying to work out where sentences and phrases begin and end - it is very off putting to read.
I'll just add that I ordered an Akubra Coober Pedy from Australian Gear/Hats by the Hundred and didn't have any issues. Having said that, I only made one order from them.
