Do you mean HatsDirect are no more, or the hat model is no more? HatsDirect are very definitely still around, I just placed an order with them for a bluegrass green Campdraft.
Just wanted to share this: I saw a middle-aged chap in a chesterfield overcoat wearing a black bowler hat in Clapham (Southwest London) yesterday. I thought it would out of place in this day and age, but given the number of people in London wearing fedoras/trilbies these days, he looked very...
Yeah, you're not the only one to be disappointed by Christys' taking shortcuts with some of their craftsmanship - I've returned a few of their hats. The general consensus of TFL seems to be along the lines that their hats are kind of ok, but are best viewed as hats for people who have so-far...
Pretty much any Akubra would probably do fine as an interim hat if you want one fast. I would ask though, clearly you've worn your hat for a long time, but have you worn many different hats? I just wonder if you would be better off, if you have the money to be able to afford custom, getting a...
Where does that size chart come from? Clearly these are US sizes, but I've seen other US companies use size charts based on cm, so the inch values were had crazy long digits. It's interesting to see a size chart based upon the inch values, rather than cm values which I am used to seeing in the...
I agree with regards to trying to wear a black pocket square with an ivory DJ its constuminess. I had read the rule about not wearing ivory DJs in the UK outside of the Last Night of the Proms. It feels appropriate to me - even if I had one, I would save it for warmer climates.
The Black Tie Guide is a great resource - I don't think it's sad that it doesn't get updated anymore - black tie is still black tie, any updates are mainly just in the blog or pictures of people doing black tie badly. ;)
The traditional rules dictate that the tie should ALWAYS be black. Matching that black tie with a burgundy cummerbund works fine. Essentially, as long as an accessory is surrounded by black (i.e. the pocket square, cummerbund or waistcoat), you can get away with varying the colour (and I think...
Black tie and burgundy pocket square would be absolutely fine (assuming you're fine with none-white pocket squares - depends how strict you are). The convention of ties and pocket squares matching is very much associated in the modern era with rented attire - just think of the black tie and...
One of the director's at Lock mentioned in an interview that they use a manufacturer in the Manchester area (I've been trying to work out who), so unless something has changed I don't think they use Christy's, at least currently. If the quality of the worksmanship in the Bates hats matches...
There are already some threads on the qualities of these hats. I can't speak for Bates, having not handled any of their stock, but I can speak for Christy's, Lock and Laird. Christy's have nice felt and (for a theoretically London based company) a reasonable price for the quality of that felt...
The colours don't look like they match up with anything that Lock, Bates, Christy's or Laird currently put out (if the colours in the picture are not true, there are a couple Bates hats it could be), however, the ribbon could have been replaced.
Looking at jackets where the stripes do and do not match up between the lapels and the collar... I don't feel I could accept a jacket where they don't match up. To me that seems like a minimum to expect (especially if the jacket has peaked lapels). The shoulders I would not expect to match up at...
