Happy New Year Loungers! As the new year begins, and as my collection keeps growing and growing, it's got me wondering where do I put all these hats?!
Currently, I've got mine in boxes taking up valuable closet space, in my car, in my music room on top of drums, cymbals, guitar amps, you name...
Just like shoes, jeans, etc. I've found there to be some size variation between makers and styles but if you bought this used, and before putting a hat jack to it, I would suggest you first take a look under the sweatband to see if the previous owner put any reducers in it. They may have if the...
I think you're on to something carouselvic, you don't get it all off. Whenever I acquire a hat I always brush it off and even though the powder may not be noticeable when worn, the stuff keeps coming off when you brush it. Also I just found this quote on a Village Hat Shop ad...
Possibly, so one would leave the powdery residue on the hat? The hats were lightly used and there aren't any evidence of stains though, so seems a bit odd. Whatever the powder is, appears to me like it was used as more of a preventative thing. I've come across this three completely seperate...
I've recently bought a few vintage western hats lately, they are all lightly colored, tan, light grey, silverbelly, etc. and they all seem to have some kind of fine white powder on them. When I go to brush them the stuff gets everywhere, at first I thought it was dust but nope, it's definitely...
Does reshaping them count as altering? I like to keep all the bits and pieces vintage as much as possible but I won't hesitate to shape them however I feel will make them look best on me.
Oh and I haven't felt duty bound to "preserve" any hat made after 1960, no good reason why, I suppose I...
UPDATE: I'm really starting to like this hat, the styling looks very interesting and cool, it is very comfortable, and the felt feels really nice, it's relatively thin, and "beavery" (should I use that word?). It's become clear to me however, that this sweatband shouldn't be reused (it's...
Thanks deadlyhandsome, what a coincidence, I go up that way to visit family every Xmas and never knew about that shop. Although I'm far too impatient to wait 2 months for the sweat, I wouldn't mind dropping in just to check the place out! Cheers, D
I would agree. In seems the area of attachment is in a much more fragile condition than any other part of the sweatband. It had me wondering if the sweat could be removed, trimmed down to healthy leather and then reattached, but I guess that's probably too much to do just for the sake of keeping...
Thanks for the suggestion, that's what I meant by repair, I should have said mending it or something other than replacing the sweatband. Double-sided tape might add enough support to keep it going for awhile longer as is (with fingers crossed) but if not, I'll replace the sweat. Interestingly...
Thanks for the encouragement! I know what you mean, now that you've put it that way, I'll probably be haunted by it if I don't do it myself! Projects are piling up though. Most of the sweatband is still intact. I conditioned it with Bick 4 last night to see if that does anything. I can probably...
The funny thing about it was, my final bid was a total accident, a slip of the keyboard, I was trying to bid something like $65 but it went in as $655! I'm so lucky you didn't bid more!
Thanks Bill, excellent suggestion, I took your advice and messaged the seller. I was nice about it, just pointed out the flaws, no accusations or anything, shared the pictures and let them know I like the hat but considering asking them to take it back. The seller admitted to having a lack of...
Thanks for your reply M Hatman, I needed to hear this. You are right, it's different than anything else that I own and it looks and feels nice. Cheers, D
Yes that's right, I guess I just kinda felt that I'd already paid for something that I didn't received. Wasn't sure about putting more money into it or cut my losses. Now I'm just wondering how long I can go with the current (separating) sweatband before it falls out, or if its useful life could...
Hi All, so I bought this vintage Mallory XV hat on the bay. After receiving it, it had many more moth nibbles than advertised and the sweatband had dried out enough to where it was separating at the stitching from the hat, also not disclosed. It's obviously not been worn much for being, I dunno...
